In 1975 Joe Browder was named Conservationist of the Year by Tropical Audubon Society, for his years of work in behalf of Everglades National Park. In 1981, he was honored by the Governors of the states of the western United States for his outstanding contributions to the analysis of western U.S. coal resources. In 1983 he was presented the Penfold Award (named for the late Joseph Penfold of the Izaak Walton League of America) by the Center for Urban Environmental Studies, in recognition of national leadership in urban environmental issues. He was honored in 1987 by the Friends of the United Nations Environment Programme, for promoting improved natural resource management and energy utilization, and in 1993 by the Florida Audubon Society for outstanding service to the natural environment of Florida.
In 1993, at a ceremony marking the Park's 25th anniversary, the US National Park Service honored Joe Browder as one of the founders of Biscayne National Park. In 1994 he was honored by Friends of the Earth for twenty-five years of environmental activism. In 1995 he was named by the US National Park Service to the advisory group that helped plan the 1997 50th anniversary of Everglades National Park. In 1999, at a US National Park Service ceremony, Joe Browder was honored as the citizen father of the Big Cypress National Preserve.
