Tracing the North’s Involvement in the Slave Trade

Introduction
Slavery in the United States is often associated with the need southern cotton plantations had for cheap labor. The North is known for fighting the war that resulted in emancipation of the slaves. In fact, the North was largely responsible for importing slaves and buying the cotton grown in the South to make fabric.

According to The Chronicle Project, “a slave is forced to work through mental or physical threat; owned or controlled by an ‘employer’, usually through mental or physical abuse or threatened abuse; dehumanized, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as ‘property’; physically constrained or has restrictions placed on his/her freedom of movement.
