Core Values Emphasized in this Learning Module

This module emphasizes the following core values:

  • Democratic Citizenship is explored in the form of rule of law and individual autonomy based upon reasoned argumentation. Reasoned argumentation is arguably necessary for a well-functioning democracy.  This cannot be accomplished without granting freedom of speech to citizens.  Without free speech, no political action is possible and no resistance to injustice and oppression is possible. Also, without free speech, elections would have no meaning at all.
  • Fairness.  This is intended to emphasize non-discrimination and equal treatment, particularly as it pertains to the realm of public opinion.
  • Responsibility.  This comes to play in the form of our obligations to refrain from restricting other’s right to freedom of speech.  We need to be respectful of this right and refrain from using force or ridiculing other’s opinions.
