Extension Activities: Cookies

Click on the Start button on your computer.  Click on ‘Search’ function of your computer to look for the http cookies on your hard drive.  The key word you should use when using the ‘Search’ function should be ‘cookies’.  When asked what to search, you should choose ‘folders and files’.  Open a couple of them and check if the data in those files look familiar to you.

Students should be startled by the number of companies that have left cookies on their computer as a result of their web surfing activities. Ask them to make a list of the companies and describe how they now feel about how their privacy has been violated.  Ask them how they feel about the honesty of these companies that have left traceable information on their computers for an unreasonably lengthy period of time (frequently indefinitely), often without telling them.
