Arsht Ethics Debates at Sports Fest

The annual Sports Fest 2010 will be held Saturday, February 13, 2010.

In a significant expansion of ethics activities into the daily fabric of UM campus life, the popular annual spring Sports Fest program – which normally features athletic competition between all the residential colleges and commuter students – now include a first-ever series of ethics debates.   The winning team receives both coveted points for their team and the right to keep the Arsht Sports Fest Trophy in their residential college.

The topic – sports ethics, of course.

Sportsfest '08 winners with Ms. ArshtSponsored by philanthropist and businesswoman Adrienne Arsht as part of a large gift to UM’s Ethics Programs, the Sports Fest debates are held each February in the Mahoney Residential College classrooms on the Coral Gables campus. Teams of students representing the residential colleges compete.

Judges include community leaders as well as UM faculty, administrators and student members of the undergraduate UM Ethics Society. The event is open to the public.

Ethics Society members develop the scenarios, or cases and issues, to be debated. They address timely sports-related issues and are designed to spark spirited discussions. Topics include, for example, extreme weight gain for competition, parental pressure on youthful athletes, consequences for steroid use, and eligibility for varsity sports.

Experienced Ethics Society students offer “training sessions” for their residential college colleagues, expanding the discussion of ethics on campus in a co-curricular setting.
