This course offers an introduction to some
of the most important historical, cultural and sociopolitical factors, trends,
ideas that are reshaping today's world.
Globalization is the central force that
presides over the restructuring of today's world. However, the apparent making
of a world culture dominated by a single political, military and economic power
(the United States) is corrected by the emergence and consolidation of regional
integration systems (such as the European Union), the rebirth of nationalism
and cultural values, and the resistance of fundamental traditional and new
ideologies to fade away.
With the purpose explaining this complex
contemporary world scene, this course has the European Union as a central point
of reference and comparison, especially in the regional context of the
Americas, with the creation of MERCOSUR and NAFTA. The evolution of
contemporary ideologies, the development of nationalism and the endemic
European wars are then considered as three of the pivotal aspects that led to
the generation of the European Union, the most successful of the regional
integration organizations, a remedy to lessen the competition among states.
The course is then complemented by a
consideration of the factors that generate clashes between cultures (most
especially between the United States and the rest of the world in the era of
globalization) and the search for a renewed national identity, and
supranational cultural linkages, as exemplified by the Ibero-American community.
Finally, the course will offer an analysis
of the current experiments in regional integration in the Americas (most
especially MERCOSUR, NAFTA and the Free Trade Area of the Americas), as
reflection or competition for the EU's model, with or without the participation
of the United States.
