This
graduate course, open to qualified undergraduates, will combine six
objectives: (1) to investigate the historical development of Europe
as a civilization and as an idea, as well as through an in-depth review
of a selected number of the main historical and political actors and
ideologies from 1815 until the present; (2) to survey the main
organizations and experiments in European integration before and after World
War II; (3) to analyze the historical development of the European Communities;
(4) to examine in depth the major institutions of the European Union;
(5) to analyze the main EU policies and current issues facing the
European Union, and (6) to reflect upon the future of the nation-state
and the idea of a united Europe, the role of transformed ideologies,
and the rebirth of nationalism, while pondering about future scenarios
for European integration.
Requisites/Grading System
(1)
Ten mini-papers (600-800 words each) based on critical readings of books,
chapters of books, scholarly articles, or video programs, accompanied by a
brief oral report (10 minutes long) which will open discussion on the subject.
(50% of the grade)
(2)
One paper, scholarly project, or long take-home examination (50% of the grade).
