Step One: Assess Your Planning

While all of the future planning you do should be done WITH your loved one, this is one life area where you really have to take your family member's likes, dislikes, talents and skills into consideration. The easiest way to do that is to have him/her with you as you go through this assessment and answer the questions. It's also important to think about retirement possibilities for your loved one. For each aspect of life that is listed below, describe the realistic situation you want your family member to have. Answer these questions about work or leisure.
1. Do you want to have a job and earn money? Would you like to work full time or part time? Why?

2. a) Do you enjoy the type of employment/daily activity you're doing now? What is it and why do you like it?

b) Would you like to do something different in the future? Explain what that is.

3. Do you prefer to work alone or with others? What jobs are you good at? Which ones do you enjoy most? Describe those.

4. Do you prefer to work indoors or out? With plants? Or animals? Do you work better with supervision or on your own?

5. Would you like to volunteer and help other people? If yes, explain your ideas of what you would like to do.
6. In your spare time, do you like to: dance, travel, talk on the phone, watch movies, go to sports events with friends? List the activities from this group that you like to do and add your own favorites.
7. Do you like going to church, to synagogue, or to a mosque? If yes, list the one you go to and the address in the box below:
8. What do you like to do best at the church or place you just listed? Describe your favorite activity there:
9. What other fun things do you like to do when you have free time? Walking, reading, video games, swimming, picnics? List them in the box:
10. If you didn't have to work anymore, what would you do? Maybe some activities mentioned above, or something else. List them in the next box:
11. Would you still like to work part time, even when you retire?
12. If there are any community organizations or clubs you would like to learn more about or even join, list them here.
