Aileen M. Ugalde, vice president, general counsel and secretary of the University, joined the University of Miami in 1994 as assistant general counsel, served as an associate general counsel in 1999 and acted as the executive director of the Presidential Search Committee in 2000. Ugalde was named assistant to the president in 2001 and vice president for government affairs in 2003. In 2006, she was appointed vice president, general counsel and secretary of the University.

She received a B.A. in Latin American Studies and International Relations (magna cum laude) from Harvard in 1988 and a J.D. (cum laude) in 1991 from the University of Miami, where she was a Harvey T. Reid scholar and served on the Law Review. Ugalde is a member of the Florida Bar, the Cuban American Bar Association, the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
