Cuban History Course
The Cuban Revolution: Causes and Impact
Prof. Luis Aguilar Leon, Senior Fellow, Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American
Studies. Former Professor at Georgetown University; columnist The
Miami Herald; author of Cuba 1933: Prologue to Revolution;
Marxism in Latin America; and De como se me murieron las palabras.
An examination of the history of the Cuban Republic during its first
hundred years. The main factors that influenced the establishment
of the Republic in 1902, the events leading to the Castro Revolution of
1959 and the Castro Revolution will be analyzed. Occasionally, specialized
guest lecturers will participate. Half the course will rely on lectures
by Professor Aguilar Leon and his invitees, and the other half on student’s
questions and discussion. A bibliography will be developed during
the course. The essence of the course is based on the Socratic notion
that it’s usually better to expand the questions than to narrow the answers.

In June 1999, the Cuban
Museum of the Americas donated its entire collection to the University
of Miami. The collection, which consist of more than 500 original
artworks and historical memorabilia, became part of the permanent collection
at the University’s Lowe Art Museum. The collection contains a number
of rare paintings and drawings, historical documents, memorabilia, old
periodicals and photographs, Afro-Cuban lore and a collection of rare flags
from 1869 to 1989.
The Cuban Museum Collection
complements existing holdings at the Lowe, featuring a number of prominent
Cuban artists, and enhances the University’s role as a major academic center
for studies about Cuba and its people.

The purpose of the Cuban Heritage Collection
(CHC) at the University of Miami Library is to support the research and
educational needs of faculty and students at this institution, and to support
the information needs of researchers from the local, state, national, and
international communities.
The mission of the CHC is to collect and preserve primary and secondary
source materials pertaining to the history of Cuba from its discovery to
the present. The CHC is also a repository of materials on Cuban-Americans
and their impact in the growth and development of many parts of the United
States, including the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County.
The Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) houses a collection of approximately
50,000 volumes of rare and contemporary books; Cuban periodical publications
from colonial times to the present; Cuban exile periodicals, or "periodiquitos,"
published around the world; and the Cuban Archives, which contain materials
produced in Cuba, by Cubans in exile, and by Cuban-Americans since 1959.
Now under construction, the
Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion will contain the bulk of the Cuban Heritage
Collection. The Pavilion is being built thru a generous donation
from the Goizueta Foundation in Georgia, and honors the memory of the late
Chairman of Coca-Cola, Roberto C. Goizueta.
