The Docent Guild supports
the educational mission of the Lowe Art Museum by providing a corps
of trained guides to give group tours. The Docent Guild also functions
as a support group by promoting interest in the Museum and by volunteering
assistance with its educational programs. The Docent Guild:
- Provides training to community volunteers to enable them to
guide groups of young people and adults who visit the Museum.
- Provides continuing education opportunities in art and art history
for its membership.
- Provides opportunities for cultural enrichment through its support
of the Museum, its exhibitions, lectures and other activities.
- The Guild works with the Curator of Education and the Museum
staff to broaden the educational outreach of the University of
Miami to the Miami-Dade community.
The Lowe Art Museum Docent Guild is over 30 years
old and offers an intensive 9-month training program in art history
and museum education theory and techniques for all docents. Recruitment
of new docents takes place each summer to begin training in September
of each year.
