COLLECTIONS RESEARCH

The Lowe Art Museum’s collections are made accessible to students and faculty of the University of Miami, along with qualified scholars and researchers, on the Museum’s premises only. The general public will have access to that part of the collection that may be on exhibition in the Museum’s galleries. In making collection objects and documentation available to researchers, priority will be given to the needs of the Lowe’s curatorial and exhibition program. In all cases, the Lowe seeks to balance requests for access with its mission to preserve the fragile and rare artwork it collects.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND COPYING OF WORKS OF ART ON DISPLAY

No photography of any kind (still camera, video recorder, motion picture camera) is allowed in the museum, except as per the Lowe's policy. This policy exists to ensure that works of art are not subjected to the adverse effects of accumulated light damage; to protect copyright, whether owned by the Lowe Art Museum or by another entity; and to provide quality control for images reproduced from the Lowe’s collections.

The museum allows visitors to sketch in the galleries using pencil only. Inks, paints, water, and other media are prohibited. Copyists must vary in size from the Lowe’s original in both dimensions by at least three inches. Due to restrictions of U.S. Copyright Law, copying of modern and contemporary American and European works on display in the Tobin and Beaux Arts Galleries is not allowed. Visitors may not sketch works of art on loan to the museum, or works in temporary exhibitions on display in the Green Gallery or Friends of Art Gallery. Work areas must be a minimum of four feet away from any artwork. Copyists may not closely approach any work of art with drawing materials in hand. Upon completing their work, visitors must make sure that the areas in which they have been working are completely clean.

STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHY REQUESTS: Students who need images of works on display for student papers and projects may complete a Student Photography Request Form, which is available at the Lowe's reception desk. This form is only for use by students currently enrolled in a course who need an image for a student paper or for study/research purposes. Please be sure to read all instructions carefully and complete the form in its entirety.

For more information regarding collections research, photography and copying of works on display please contact the Museum Registrar.
