MAGECEnhancing the geriatric knowledge and skills of health professionals by expanding and developing educational programs and activities in geriatrics.

The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center is a consortium of educators from the University of Miami, the Miami Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center, Barry University, Florida Atlantic University, and University of South Florida. The Miami-Dade Area Health Education Center (AHEC) also contributes to the planning and development of educational programming. MAGEC was established to provide a coordinated interdisciplinary program of geriatric education for all health-care professionals serving the elderly in South Florida.

WE ARE BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD
TO THE FUTURE!

We would like to announce to our many loyal community partners and friends in the health care professions that... MAGEC has been refunded! To those yet unmet professionals seeking cutting-edge training and education in the ever-changing world of geriatrics, this should be an introduction to the "wonderful world of MAGEC."

After nearly 19 years in its previous existence, MAGEC has been reborn. As a result, you can expect to find many of the same, successful educational components of the previous program...combined with some new faces, ideas, technologies, and perspectives. Our mission, however, remains the same: To serve as a world class, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, culturally diverse geriatric education center for the healthcare professionals of South Florida.

MAGEC's New Initiatives:

Over the course of the next three years, MAGEC will embark on the following new initiatives:

  • Implement a project whereby patients will identify issues they want their healthcare providers to discuss with them.
  • Educate interdisciplinary practitioners about the assessment and treatment of compulsive gambling in the older population.
  • Promote an understanding of the importance of health literacy in the older population, as a factor affecting health outcomes.
  • Increase the awareness and use of evidence-based health promotion and chronic disease self-management in the community.
  • Provide multidisciplinary education on elder abuse, neglect and exploitation to healthcare professionals.
  • Educate healthcare providers on how technology (telehealth and telemedicine) can be used to facilitate healthcare delivery and promote positive healthcare behaviors among elders.
  • Teach primary care physicians and other practitioners how to manage older patients in community practice via the use of proven "tool kits."
  • Collaborate with the Center on Aging to establish and implement a continuing education certificate program in gerontology for community healthcare professionals and paraprofessionals.

The second 20-hour session, offered in the fall, is discipline specific, and subject matter varies with each discipline.
  • A series of one-day or half-day continuing education courses and conferences on a wide range of geriatric topics for all health care professionals. Examples of topics include: falls prevention, alcoholism in the elderly, Dementia, and Osteoporosis.

To accommodate travel and time restraints on many participants, MAGEC will be offering geriatric courses for CEU credit on our web page, as well as videoconferences.
  • MAGEC offers individualized training courses tailored to an institution's specific educational needs. MAGEC has developed partnerships with hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities for this purpose.
  • MAGEC publishes a quarterly newsletter, MAGEC Moments. It contains informative articles for health care professionals, as well as a calendar of our upcoming events.
  • The Aging Game is reported by participants to be one of our most powerful classes. It is an interactive, simulation training that teaches through experience. It can be adapted for any size group and can be conducted in any setting. Click here to additional information.
