MAGEC Enhancing the knowledge and skills of geriatric healthcare professionals by developing and presenting high-quality, evidence-based educational programs and activities.

The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center is a consortium of educators from the University of Miami, the Miami Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center, Barry University, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University. The Miami-Dade Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the West Palm Beach VA Hospital also contribute to the planning and development of educational programs. MAGEC provides a coordinated interdisciplinary program of geriatric continuing education for healthcare professionals serving the elderly in Florida counties of: Monroe, Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Brevard, Volusia, and Glades.

MAGEC's Plan for 2010-2015

We would like to announce to our many loyal community partners and friends in the healthcare professions that... MAGEC has been awarded a new cooperative agreement with HRSA for the next five years until 2015! To those professionals that are new to this website and who are seeking cutting-edge education and training in the ever-changing world of geriatrics, let this be an introduction to the "wonderful world of MAGEC."

After nearly 22 years MAGEC continues to be successful in educating healthcare professionals in the field of geriatrics and will now extend that reach throughout our new 10-county service area to include Monroe, Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Brevard, Volusia, and Glades counties.  You can expect to find some of the best of our educational components of the past...combined with some new topics, ideas, technologies, and delivery systems. Our mission, however, remains the same: To be a world-class, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, culturally- diverse Geriatric Education Center for the healthcare professionals of Florida.

To accommodate travel and time constraints, MAGEC will be offering geriatric courses for CEU credits on our website, as well as through real-time and archived videoconferences and webinars.
  • MAGEC also offers individualized training courses tailored to an institution's specific educational needs. MAGEC has developed partnerships with hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities for this purpose.
  • MAGEC publishes a quarterly newsletter, MAGEC Moments. It contains timely informative articles for geriatric healthcare professionals, as well as a calendar of our upcoming events.
  • The Aging Game is reported by participants to be one of our most impactful activities. It is an interactive simulation training that teaches through experience. It may be adapted for any size group and conducted in any setting. Click here for additional information.
