Mirta Alvarez will join MAIA as Associate Director for Professional Development in the summer of 2007. She comes to us from a highly successful career in the State Department where she gained extensive domestic and international experience. During her career, she served as Senior Advisor to the Director General of the Foreign Service, and as U.S. Consul in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. She has also served on numerous US delegations, most notably in the capacity of Senior Advisor to the U.S. delegation at the UN Millennium Summit.
She received the American Foreign Service Association William
Rivkin Award for "Extraordinary Contributions to the Practice of
Diplomacy," as well as five Superior Honor Awards and a Meritorious Honor Award from the U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C., for outstanding performance.
She holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a minor in Chinese Affairs. She also received her B.A, magna cum laude, in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
