The purpose of the Medical Library Association (MLA) Mental Health Special Interest Group is to foster cooperation and support among libraries and librarians whose collections or services include the literature of mental health. The MLA Mental Health SIG:
  1. Provides a forum for exchange of knowledge about psychiatry, psychology, mental health issues, and mind-body connection.
  2. Facilitates communication and collaboration in the development and delivery of information services related to these areas.
  3. Promotes the exchange of ideas and experiences in promoting and marketing mental health issues.
  4. Collaborates with Sections to develop relevant mental health programming at MLA and promote professional development for librarians in this area.

ADDITIONAL NETWORKING RESOURCES FOR MENTAL HEALTH LIBRARIANS

MHLIB is a discussion forum for mental health librarians, consultants in the mental health field, and other professionals working or having an interest in mental health. The primary purpose of the MHLIB is to share information, answer questions, share available duplicate materials, and post announcements of conferences and employment opportunities. The list is maintained by John R. Clark, M.Ed., M.L.I.S.

Anyone with an interest in mental health librarianship/issues can join the MHLIB by contacting John R. Clark at berek@tds.net or wizard@hartland.lib.me.us. The list is by approved subscription only to maintain the high level of professionalism. MLIS students with an interest in mental health are welcome as well.


The Association of Mental Health Librarians (AMHL) is a professional organization of individuals working in the field of mental health information delivery. Its members come from a variety of information settings: inpatient hospitals, academic and research institutions, and psychiatric and psychological agencies. AMHL provides opportunities for its members to enhance their professional skills; encourages research activities in mental health librarianship; and strengthens the role of the librarian within the mental health community.

2007 AMHL Annual Meeting: The 2007 AMHL conference was held on October 26-28, 2007, at the Nathan Kline Institute in Orangeburg, NY. The conference was hosted by President Stuart Moss of the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. Overnight accommodations were at the Pearl River Hilton, which was a few minutes down the road. Please check the AMHL website for additional information.


SALIS (Substance Abuse Librarians & Information Specialists) is an international association of individuals and organizations with special interests in the exchange and dissemination of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) information.
