Finding remarkable, dedicated University of Miami graduates is easy. Choosing among them for the annual Alumni Awards isn’t. The high-caliber individuals honored April 30 at the Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables represented the best of the best.

Carolyn B. Lamm, J.D. ’73, partner in the Washington, D.C., office of White & Case LLP, received the Edward T. Foote II Alumnus of Distinction Award for the great honor and recognition her career has brought the University. The international commercial litigation expert is the first School of Law graduate elected president of the American Bar Association. Named one of the 100 most influential lawyers by The National Law Journal, Lamm shares her ’Cane pride with husband Peter Halle, J.D. ’73, and their two sons.

A former Alumni Association president and UM trustee, F. W. Mort Guilford, B.B.A. ’51, J.D. ’56, won the Henry King Stanford Alumnus of the Year Award, named for UM’s third president. The Guilford & Associates, P.A. senior partner has been instrumental in awarding many grants to UM as director of the Alma Jennings Foundation. A President’s Council and Iron Arrow member, he served on the Jackson Health System Public Health Trust board, and was on UM’s Citizens Board for 17 years.

Samantha Dietz, Ph.D. ’04, a School of Education research associate, earned the William R. Butler Community Service Award for leading the school’s efforts to help residents of an Overtown, Miami, neighborhood revitalize their community.

Former Hurricanes and pro baseball player Thomas R. Adams, B.B.A. ’57, won the Orange: Outstanding Service Award for being an active President’s Council and President’s Circle member, a reunion leader, a School of Business Administration volunteer, and a generous donor.

The Green: Outstanding Fundraiser Award went to Trustees Hilarie Bass, J.D. ’81, and Wayne Chaplin, B.B.A. ’79, J.D. ’82, for superior work helping the School of Law exceed its Momentum campaign goal by $6 million, raising a total of $22.5 million in four years.

The S-100/Cafeteria Reunion Committee of Victoria Corrigan Fine, B.S. ’80, M.B.A. ’81; Edgar Fernandez, B.B.A. ’78; Lillian May, B.B.A. ’81, M.B.A. ’83; Marlene May, A.B. ’82; Alicia McCormack Malave, B.B.A. ’81; and Israel Perez-Siam, B.B.A. ’79, M.B.A. ’85, accepted the White Award for Outstanding Affiliate Group for Alumni Weekend 2008 outreach success.

Faculty Senate 2009 Outstanding Teaching Award winner Anita Cava merited the Inside Out Award for her tremendous efforts to reengage alumni through the Business Ethics Program and the Ethics Film Series.

Rounding out this year’s exemplary awardees were Outstanding Young Alumnus Christopher Adam Zavatsky, B.S.C.E. ’07, B.S.A.E. ’07, of Miller Legg; superlative philanthropist and Board of Trustees immediate past chair Marta Weeks, who was named an honorary alumna; Students of Distinction Sebastian Aspe, B.S.M.E. ’08, Joseph Dussling, Nicholas Heinz, and Daniel Martinez, of the College of Engineering, cited for winning second place in last year’s NASA aeronautics competition; and the Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Greater Miami, Greater New York, Houston, Southwest Florida, and Washington, D.C., national alumni club chapters for top-notch programming efforts.
