Anita Wander, A.B. ’46, is a volunteer drama teacher, actor, and director in Prescott, Arizona. For years she taught drama and journalism in Miami Beach and for almost three decades lived in Germany, teaching in U.S. military schools.

Nancy Lefholz Rowell, A.B. ’49, is a member of the Junior League of Jacksonville, Florida, as well as the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club Auxiliary, the Women’s Club, and the First Presbyterian Church—all in Panama City, Florida, where she lives.

Robert M. Kane, B.B.A. ’51, M.B.A. ’53, a former faculty member who developed an Aviation Administration educational degree program, recently had the 15th edition of his 1967 Air Transportation textbook published.

Ralph L. Anderson, B.B.A. ’52, M.B.A. ’54, is retired and living in Tucson, Arizona. He has two sons and six grandchildren, and looks forward to hearing from his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers.

Mary Lou (Nelson) Brotherson, B.Ed. ’55, is a child development and early childhood education literacy consultant and an adjunct professor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida International University. She also volunteers at the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood, where she was named interviewer of the year.

Dorita (Roca) Marina, A.B. ’55, M.Ed. ’63, Ph.D. ’75, reports she is now semi-retired in her field of forensic psychology.

Wallace L. Leinheardt, B.B.A. ’59, a partner in the firm of Jaspan Schlesinger Hoffman LLP, was elected chairman of the Trusts and Estates Section of the New York State Bar Association. His practice is focused mainly on mental hygiene law, surrogate’s court, estate planning, and general civil litigation.

Michael Z. Brenan, B.B.A. ’60, was inducted into Delta Sigma Pi’s Golden Helmet Society and honored by Sigma Alpha Epsilon for 50 years of continuous service and membership.

Frances (Dolly) MacIntyre, A.B. ’60, was one of six women selected by the Women’s History Coalition of Miami-Dade County as a 2008 Woman of Impact. She was honored for her outstanding community service to the county in the area of historic preservation.

Albert Schlazer, B.Ed. ’60, recently celebrated his tenth anniversary at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, where he is senior sport manager. Albert retired from Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus in 1997 after 38 years in education.

Leon J. Hoffman, A.B. ’61, says he continues to run a thriving clinical psychology practice in Chicago, providing individual and group psychotherapy as well as consultation for organizations and individuals. His granddaughter Abigail Rose, daughter of Rebecca Hoffman, A.B. ’88, M.Ed. ’92, was born in April 2007.

Gretchen R. Fletcher, A.B. ’62, a poet whose chapbook, That Severed Cord, was published by Finishing Line Press, won the Poetry Society of America’s Bright Lights, Big Verse competition, and was invited to read her prize-winning work in Times Square.

Carole D. Reinhart, A.B. ’63, a professor of trumpet at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, and an International Trumpet Guild Award of Merit recipient, recently taught master classes at the China Conservatory in Beijing.

Ronnie Wilker, B.B.A. ’63, retired after 30 years in real estate. Ronnie’s wife, Carol, is still with Prudential Woodmont Realty in Nashville, Tennessee.

Carol (Dittrich) Ciresa, B.Ed. ’64, recently retired after three decades teaching gifted education. She has two children and five grandchildren.

Michael B. Greenbaum, B.S. ’67, vice chancellor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, has been named one of the 50 most influential rabbis in America by Newsweek magazine.

Alan Nelson Sirkin, B.S.C.E. ’67, of Miami-based Sirkin Enterprises, was elected to the UM College of Engineering’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Advisory Board.

Barry R. Levitz, B.B.A. ’69, became a commercial pilot after retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1989. Last year he retired from Continental Airlines and spends time with his wife of 37 years, Mary-Beth (McDermott) Levitz, at their home in Naples, Florida.

José Szapocznik, B.S. ’69, A.B. ’69, M.S. ’73, M.S. ’77, Ph.D. ’77, has been named chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He also serves as associate dean for community development and director of the Center for Family Studies at the Miller School and has led national efforts to prevent and treat adolescent drug abuse and other behavior problems among Hispanic youth.

Robert F. Wolin, B.Ed. ’69, a professional scenic designer based in New York City, designed the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s 2008 productions of Romeo and Juliet and Cymbeline as well as the summer production of Anything Goes for Kent State University’s Porthouse Theatre Company.

John F. Tholen, M.S. ’75, Ph.D. ’78, a clinical psychologist and qualified medical evaluator for the State of California, has published Winning the Disability Challenge: A Practical Guide to Successful Living for people who have become disabled. He says he wrote the book after treating thousands of disabled workers during the past 28 years and facing his own physical crisis in 2004.

Raymond A. Belliotti, M.A. ’76, Ph.D. ’77, the Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy at SUNY-Fredonia, has published Watching Baseball, Seeing Philosophy: The Great Thinkers at Play on the Diamond (McFarland Publishers, 2008).

Lewis Eric Hassett, B.B.A. ’76, based in the Atlanta office of Morris, Manning & Martin LLP, has been named co-chairman of the law firm’s Insurance and Reinsurance Group, which, among other matters, represented two private equity firms in securing regulatory approvals for their $635 million acquisition of Direct General in 2007.

Regina-Marie Walsh-Minor, M.Ed. ’76, Ed.D. ’97, has been appointed rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Cranford, New Jersey.

Daniel W. Raab, J.D. ’78, a transportation law attorney with a Miami practice, has published Transportation Terms and Conditions, a reference book for transportation companies, insurers, attorneys, law students, and others interested in admiralty, transportation, and international law. He has taught insurance law and policy at UM as an adjunct professor.

Kenneth R. Benoit, M.M. ’79, enters the fall semester as director of the New Music Ensemble at Broward Community College’s North Campus. His composition for organ was performed at the Society of Composers, Inc., Region VI/Contemporary Music Festival at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, in April.

Scott A. Burin, A.B. ’79, who owns a HUD-subsidized, Section 8 housing project for the elderly and developmentally disabled, was named Philanthropist of the Year, 2007-08, by the City of Youngstown, Ohio.

Kenneth D. Fuchs, B.M. ’79, a professor of music composition at the University of Connecticut, has released a second disc of orchestral and chamber works recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra on the Naxos label.

Alan Pollack, Ph.D. ’79, M.D. ’87, who was the Gerald E. Hanks, M.D. Endowed Chair and chairman of the Department of Radiology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, since 2001, has returned to Miami to chair the University’s Miller School of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology. He will oversee clinical and research teams at UM/Syl­vester and serve as chief of service at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The National Association of Professional and Executive Women inducted her as one if its “Women of Excellence 2007.”

Damian J. Fernandez, Ph.D. ’86, has been named the provost and executive vice president of academic affairs at Purchase College in New York.

Peter O. McGuinness, B.M. ’86, is a 2008 Grammy Award nominee in the category of “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist” for his arrangement of the Charlie Chaplin theme song “Smile” —heard on Pete McGuinness’s 2007 album First Flight: The Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra (Summit Records).

Juan Carlos Coto, B.S.C. ’88, has signed a two-year development contract with 20th Century Fox and will be co-executive producer for the next season of Fox’s thriller series 24, scheduled to begin airing in January 2009.

Steven T. Robinson, A.B. ’88, M.A. ’92, creates voiceovers and advertising material for Good Morning, Diaspora!, a talk show that airs weekdays on WSRF-AM 1580 in North Miami Beach, the same station for which he previously cohosted Diaspora Speaks Out.

Carlos J. Martinez, J.D. ’90, currently a chief assistant public defender with the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office, has been elected without opposition to be Florida’s first and only Cuban-American public defender, succeeding Bennett Brummer.

Samuel W. Daley Jr., B.S.C. ’91, signed with Technicolor-New York as a colorist. His feature credits include The Departed, I Am Legend, and Inside Man.

Amanda M. McGovern, J.D. ’92, a shareholder at Kenny Nachwalter, P.A., is practicing international law, after 15 years litigating mostly domestic commercial matters. She joined the International Law Section as well as the Inter-American Bar Association, at whose annual conference she spoke in June. Randy C. Bryan, J.D. ’93, a commander in the U.S. Navy’s JAG Corps Reserve, has been recalled to active duty to serve on a task force in Iraq for approximately eight months, likely addressing legal issues involving detained army combatants.

Gregory Herman-Giddens, LL.M.E. ’93, founder and principal of TrustCounsel P.A., was named a 2008 Impact Financial Leader of the Triangle Area of North Carolina by Business Leader magazine.

Tod M. Melgar, M.S.B.E. ’93, has been elected partner in the New York office of the intellectual property law firm Morgan & Finnegan L.L.P., where he was an associate since 1999 in the field of litigation and prosecution of patents in a variety of technology areas. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as an electromechanical engineer.

Kimberly A. (Bamberry) Blaze, B.S.C. ’95, and her husband, Matt, have an infant son, Ryan, and expect another baby this fall. Kimberly reports she survived an aortic aneurysm in 2005.

Benjamin A. Metzger, B.M. ’95, is the media specialist at an alternative high school in Long Beach, New York, and director for the Long Island location of a rock and roll camp for kids called Dayjams. He also works at a synagogue preschool, teaches private music lessons, and finds time for his music career, performing as the artist Benoir.

Car Crash Claims Law School Expert

Alan Swan, a professor in the School of Law who joined the University’s faculty in 1972, was killed in an automobile accident in June in Miami. He was 74. Swan, the law school’s senior expert on private international law and international trade, published the most widely used text on international business transactions. He taught thousands of students during his career and chaired the school’s LL.M. program in international law for many years. Swan, who was being treated for cancer, was planning to retire after the fall 2008 semester.

Beloved Midwifery Pioneer

Theresa C. Gesse, B.S.N. ’69, founder of the state’s first graduate nurse-widwifery program at the School of Nursing and Health Studies, passed away February 24 at the age of 75. She was a faculty member at the school for more than 30 years before her 2006 retirement. She also developed parent-child nursing and women’s health nurse practitioner majors at UM and served as associate dean for graduate programs. A scholarship has been established in her memory. Stephen L. Schnellenberger, B.B.A. ’86, who suffered from a rare endocrine disease all his life, died March 9 at the age of 48. Despite numerous surgeries, he played sports, worked in computer sales, and often sat on the sidelines with his father, legendary Miami football coach Howard Schnellenberger, at South Florida games.
