Before Election Day ’08, UM students, many eager to cast their first ballot, had the chance to hear both presidential candidates in person at the 7,000-seat BankUnited Center—Obama with his “Change We Need” address mid-September and John McCain at his entertainment-fueled “Road to Victory” rally after midnight on November 3. “Very few universities can claim to have had both presidential candidates on campus,” said Rudy Fernandez, vice president for government affairs. Entrepreneurship major Seth Levy, 21, noted: “UM staging these events shows that the University cares about what we think.” The appearances were part of Decision 2008: A Dialogue for Democracy, a University-wide politically themed series of speakers, film screenings, debates, and other events intended to engage students in the top issues of the day.
