UNITED WAY FUNDRAISING TOTALS

Faculty and staff came through again this year for the United Way, raising more than $1 million. More than $800,000 of the total was raised via employee pledges and fundraising, and another $200,000 from an anonymous gift to be used by the School of Medicine. Additionally, 303 employees pledged one percent of their annual salary, up from 263 last year. More than 40 UM programs and initiatives receive funding from the United Way. Way to go 'Canes!


CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON, INC. TO LECTURE

The School of Business Administration invites faculty and staff to attend the 2003 Northern Trust Lecture Series, 7 p.m., Wednesday February 5 in the Storer Auditorium. Celebrating Freedom, Adventure and Individual Expression: 100 Years of Tradition is the title of the lecture to be given by Jeffrey L. Bleustein, chairman and CEO of Harley-Davidson, Inc. MIAMI EUROPEAN UNION CENTER TO HOST LUNCHEON AND SEMINAR

The College of Arts & Sciences and the Miami European Union Center (EUC) will host a luncheon/seminar on the implications of European Union enlargement and South Florida's role as a gateway for current and newly acceded EU members to Central and South America, noon - 6 p.m., Friday, February 7, at the James W. McLamore Building. The keynote speaker is Minister Counselor Miroslaw Luczka, representing the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the U.S., H.E. Przemyslaw Grudzinski. The Miami EUC was established in 2001 as a joint venture between UM and Florida International University to promote European Union studies. The event is free and open to the public. UM, CORAL GABLES, TEAM UP FOR SENIOR RESIDENT SURVEY

The Center on Aging, in cooperation with the City of Coral Gables, has embarked on a comprehensive survey of the needs of elderly residents in the City of Coral Gables, the results of which will serve as a tool to help provide appropriate services for senior citizens in Coral Gables. Spearheaded by City of Coral Gables Commissioner Maria Anderson and directed by Associate Professor Ira Sheskin, Ph.D., the survey will take several weeks and involve telephone interviews of more than 800 senior residents chosen scientifically at random. 2002 FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS (FSA) FORMS DUE

Any claims incurred during calendar year 2002 must be sent to the prior FSA administrator, CoreSource, Inc. using the 2002 claim forms and be postmarked by Monday, March 31. Claim forms for calendar year 2002 for Health and Dependent Care can be downloaded as Adobe Acrobat files. GRADUATE TUITION REMISSION TAX FORMS AVAILABLE

If you or a dependent are enrolled in graduate level courses using the tuition remission benefit, you should notify Benefits Administration of the total number of graduate credits that you anticipate taking in calendar year 2003 to lessen your year-end tax burden. This allows Benefits Administration to withhold taxes from your paycheck in equal installments over a longer period in the calendar year. You can download the Graduate Tuition Remission Taxation Estimate form from the Benefits Administration's website in Adobe Acrobat format. By law, the University must collect taxes due from employees by the end of the calendar year in which the graduate courses were taken. Employees are responsible for paying tax on the value of graduate tuition remission received in excess of $5,250 in a calendar year, and all dependent graduate tuition remission is taxable. All taxable graduate tuition remission in calendar year 2003 will be taxed as ordinary income.


SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORTS AVAILABLE ON WEB

The Summary Annual Reports for the Group Health Insurance Plan, Group Dental Plan and Group Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Plan and other plans for the period beginning June 1, 2001 and ending May 31, 2002, are now available on the Web. Benefits Administration has made the Summary Annual Reports available to you as required by law.

TWELVE-WEEK WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM FOR DIABETICS

The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) has created Miami Lite, a 12-week weight loss program for individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Open to the public, Miami Lite will help participants with weight loss, nutrition, controlling portion sizes, diabetes education, weight management techniques and guidelines for exercise. The program starts at 8 a.m., Thursday, February 6, at the DRI, 1450 NW 10TH Avenue, first floor. Participants will meet every Thursday from 8 - 10 a.m. at the DRI. DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE WORKSHOP ON INSULIN THERAPY

The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) presents the half-day workshop Basal/Bolus Insulin Therapy for the Primary Care Physician, 7:45 a.m. - 1 p.m., Friday, February 7, at the first floor DRI Education Conference Center. This program will focus on the concepts and practical application of intensive insulin therapy for the management of insulin-treated patients seen at the primary care level. CME and CEU credits will be given. A continental breakfast and refreshments will be available. Registration is $15, which is waived for UM/JMH employees. FREE COMPUTER BOOKS

The School of Continuing Studies will be giving away computer books in the UC Breezeway, 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., Thursday, February 6. The books are surplus or slightly old computer textbooks that are no longer needed. Staff members will also be available to discuss computer-training classes available, such as the University of Miami Office Specialist (UMOS) certification, which trains, tests and certifies your skills in Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook, and Microsoft professional certifications. MIAMI VS. VILLANOVA MEN'S BASKETBALL TIME CHANGE

The men's basketball game scheduled for Saturday, February 8 has a new tip off time of 8 p.m. at the Convocation Center. PROPOSALS BEING ACCEPTED FOR CANCER RESEARCH AWARDS

The Damon Runyon -Lilly Clinical Investigator Award, which supports young physician-scientists conducting patient oriented cancer research, is accepting proposals. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident, and only two nominations per institution will be accepted. The award will be granted for a period of five years and is subject to review and approval each year. If interested, submit a one-page summary of your research along with your CV to the Executive Office of Research Leadership by Friday, February 7.
