MUSIC INDUSTRY ENTREPRENEUR
TO SPEAK AT GUSMAN

As part of the School of Music's inaugural season of the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors Series, Chairman of Harman International, Dr. Sidney Harman, will present a lecture on Entrepreneurism in the Music Industry, 4 p.m., today, February 20 at Gusman Hall. Harman is known for beginning the high-fidelity industry when he co-founded the well-known Harman-Kardon Company in 1952. CELEBRATING AFRICAN HERITAGE

Come celebrate African Heritage, 8 - 10 p.m., Wednesday, February 26, at the Pearson Residential classroom. There will be a free sampling of Caribbean and African Cuisine, talks by Dr. Robin Bachin titled Race, Politics, and Popular Culture in Jazz Age Chicago and Dr. Edmund Abaka on Threads that Bind: The African Diaspora in a Global Perspective, and African dancing by the African Student Union. The evening is sponsored by United Black Students, African Student Union, UM Apartment Area, Council of International Students Organization, Phi Alpha Theta, The History Club and the History Department and is free of charge.


FALL BREAK UPDATE

The Fall Break for the 2003-2004 Academic Year will be Friday, October 25. The Academic Calendar for 2003-2004 has been updated to reflect this change.

ECKERDS NOW ACCEPTS EZREIMBURSE CARD

Eckerds pharmacies are now participating in the Flexible Spending Health Care EZReimburse Card program. Just present your card to the pharmacist at the time you request your prescription. Remember, if you use your EZReimburse Card at a participating pharmacy, you do not need to submit any documentation to Fringe Benefits Management Company (FBMC).

For a complete list of participating pharmacies, visit www.fbmc-benefits.com. You'll need your PIN number to log on and access the FBMC Customer Service Center. Select the "Account Information" tab, and you'll be prompted to enter your employee number and password. Enter your social security number (SSN) as your Employee Number and the last four digits of your SSN as your temporary password. Choose a new password upon your initial visit to the web site.

CANTERBURY SCHOOL WALK/STROLL-A-THON

Come out and cheer the kids of Canterbury Pre-school as they walk their laps between the UC and the Ashe Building for the annual Walk/Stroll-A-Thon, 11 a.m., Friday, February 28. Afterwards, join the staff and kids on the Canterbury patio for a Pollo Tropical lunch complete with black beans & rice, plantains, soft drink and dessert. This is the school's primary fund-raising event. Tickets for the lunch are $8 and all proceeds support the school. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT INCREASES THE NUMBER OF $20 SEATS AT MEN'S BASKETBALL GAMES

The Athletic Department has expanded the popular $20 ticket section for men's basketball games at the new Convocation Center to include an additional 730 seats. The University also offers a group discount plan for men's basketball games for groups of 10 or more. LECTURE EXAMINES AIDS AND DRUG ABUSE

The Center for Family Studies in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' Grand Rounds Lecture Series presents Dr. Henry L. Francis, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse's Center on AIDS and other Medical Consequences of Drug Abuse, 1 - 2:30 p.m., Friday, February 28, at the Bascom Palmer Retter Auditorium. Dr. Francis' lecture, titled AIDS and Other Medical Consequences of Drug Abuse, explores drug use as a public health epidemic, with particular attention to drug use as a vector for other diseases of national and global public health significance such as HIV and HVC. ETHICS CONFERENCE SET FOR MARCH

The Ethics Programs and the Florida Bioethics Network announce the 11th annual conference, Clinical Ethics: Debates, Decisions, Solutions, Friday, March 7 at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport. The program features presentations on ethics and aging, ethics committees, "moral slogans," virtue ethics, end-of-life care, cloning, genetic testing of minors, bio-terrorism and much more. CEUs have been approved for nurses, physicians, psychologists, social workers and guardians. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY GRANTS AVAILABLE

The UM/Sylvester Office of Research Administration is now accepting applications for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Institutional Grant to provide funds for meritorious cancer research that cannot be readily supported through other funding mechanisms. The primary purpose of the ACS grant is to provide seed funds for the initiation of promising new projects or novel ideas by junior faculty members. An award of $20,000 is available for a one-year period. Applicants must not have received any peer reviewed funding. For guidelines and application forms, contact Dorothy Mills at 305-243-6292. Applications must be received by Saturday, March 15.

The Civic Chorale of Greater Miami invites the community to a concert celebrating Black History Month, St. Patrick's Day, and love, 4 p.m., Saturday, February 22 at Gusman Hall. SCHOOL OF MUSIC PRESENTS OPERA GALA 2003

The Opera Department's Opera Gala 2003, 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, in Gusman Concert Hall, features music from some of the world's best-loved operas by Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. STUDENT PRODUCTION OF THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES

The Women's Resource Center and the Counseling Center are sponsoring a student production of The Vagina Monologues, 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, February 26 & 27, at Storer Auditorium. The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Eve Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences The play is a part of V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women, and proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to SafeSpace - a shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence. POPULAR CUBAN BALLET'S PREMIERE NOW ON VIDEO

Casa Bacardi presents a video-recording of the ballet Cecilia Valdes, A Cuban Ballet from its North American premiere this past fall as part of the School of Music's Festival Miami, 2:30 p.m., daily (including Saturday and Sunday) throughout the month of February at Casa Bacardi. Based on the masterpiece novel by Cuban writer Cirilo Villaverde, Cecilia Valdes depicts life in 19th Century colonial Cuba illustrating the interconnections of the lives of Spanish landlords and their slaves. Cost is $5, but UM faculty, staff and students are free, and no reservations required.
