NEW PEOPLE SEARCH ON THE WEB

The University has launched a new way of finding departments and people on the Web at http://directory.web.miami.edu (or by clicking on the "Find People" link at the top of the main University Web pages). You can now search by function, so if for example you're seeking someone responsible for Web development, just type in those keys words and off you go. Department listings are updated year-round, thus users have access to up-to-date information.


IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING BIWEEKLY TIMESHEET 2R01

Attention supervisors and department heads of biweekly employees -- the biweekly timesheet for 2R01 (May 23 through June 5) does not include the standard hours for the Memorial Day holiday. To ensure that your employees are paid for this holiday, they should cross out the hours for May 26 in the "Sched. Hours" column (shaded in green) and write them in the "Sched. Hol" column on the timesheet. Please verify that this change has been made when timesheets are signed.


HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATIONS TO AFFECT TRAFFIC ON CAMPUS

On Thursday, June 12, the Convocation Center will host three high school graduation ceremonies: at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 8 p.m. As a result, traffic flow on Ponce de Leon Boulevard and parking in the Ponce de Leon and Pavia Garages isexpected to be a little heavier than usual. Wellness Center patrons may find their parking plans impacted as well, and it is recommended that they allot additional time when visiting the center on this date. UM NIGHT AT SUMMER SHORTS FESTIVAL

On Thursday, June 19, UM alumni, employees, and friends are invited to City Theatre's Summer Shorts Festival at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre for a special price of $22 per ticket. The annual Summer Shorts Festival is devoted to premieres of "shorts" - original comedies and dramas running five to 20 minutes long. Enjoy complimentary appetizers provided by Café Tu Tu Tango at 6:30 p.m., and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. A cash bar will be available. NO MORE EXCUSES FOR A HIGH GOLF SCORE

Beginning Tuesday, June 17, the Wellness Center will offer a conditioning program designed exclusively for golf enthusiasts. The golf program utilizes two patented machines available on the PGA tour trailer -- the Med-X stretch and rotary torso machines. The program, which is open to both Wellness Center members and non-members, includes a pre/post golf swing velocity analysis, 16 training sessions (every Tuesday and Thursday for eight weeks), and in-depth training instruction with stability and medicine balls. The cost is $175 for Wellness Center members, $250 for non-members, and $100 for UM students. Only four participants allowed per session. Call 305-284-5433 to register.


ENJOY TIMELESS MUSIC AT CONCERT SERIES TO BENEFIT UM/SYLVESTER

The Cellar Club of the Biltmore Hotel presents the Nostalgia Concert Series, Thursday through Monday, June 12 to 16, with proceeds to benefit the UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Sponsored by Southern Wine & Spirits, the concert series features Leon Russell, The Turtles (featuring Flo and Eddie), 5th Dimension, The Little River Band, and Rita Coolidge. All shows begin at 9:30 p.m., and will be presented "nightclub style" with limited seating in the Biltmore Hotel's Country Club Ballroom. Tickets to each performance are $75 for preferred seating, $65 for general seating, and include a complimentary wine bar. LEARN THE ESSENTIALS OF POPULAR COMPUTER PROGRAMS THIS SUMMER

The NGJ Information Systems Institute will offer a two-day class in Crystal Reports and a one-day class in Project 2002 during the summer. If you are interested in attending these classes, call 305-284-2100 or send an e-mail.

  • Crystal Reports Design and Development - Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10 and 11
    Learn the skills necessary for typical report generation. The report design concepts involved in creating a new report will be covered, as well as a review of the basics of record selection, sorting, grouping, and summarizing. Formatting skills and conditional reporting tools necessary to create presentation-quality reports are also topics in the class. A key component that will be covered is working with the Formula Editor. This class is designed for managers and staff directly involved in creating, maintaining and reporting to management and customers. Cost is $600 and includes a book and refreshments.
  • Project 2002 (Intro) - Tuesday, July 8
    The class covers not only the basics of the program, but also emphasizes the reporting functions of this popular package. In addition to these sessions, NGJ will also offer an advanced Project 2002 later in the summer. Cost is $250 and includes a book and refreshments.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO BECOME OMBUDSMAN

The Ombudsman Council of South Dade and the Florida Keys is seeking citizen volunteers to serve as Long-Term Care Ombudsmen. Volunteers are trained and certified prior to being appointed by the governor, and then charged with improving the quality of life for long-term care residents in our area. This includes residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and adult family care homes. AQUATICS SPORTS CAMP

Randy Ableman, head diving coach, will offer the Cane Aquatics Sports Camp at the Whitten Student Center Outdoor Pool, beginning Monday, June 9, and running for seven one-week sessions ending on Friday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Instruction will be given in the areas of swimming, springboard diving, and trampoline for children ages five to 12. Other programs include swim lessons, swim team for children and adults, and diving camp and lessons. Cost is $160 per week, discounts are available, and a registration fee required. WEB DESIGN FOR TEENAGERS

The Computer and Technology Group is offering a three-week Web design course for teenagers, Monday, June 16, through Thursday, July 3.   • The Young Musicians' Camp is a four-week summer camp for beginning to advanced instrumentalists and vocalists, ages 7 to 16, Monday, June 30, through Friday, July 25. Students will participate in a variety of musical activities, including chamber music, small jazz group, composition, band, computer, studio recording, improvisation, steel drum ensemble, musical theater, creative movement, and instrumental ensembles. During the week of Monday, July 21, jazz vocalist and violinist Nicole Yarling, who has recorded and performed with Jimmy Buffett and Joe Williams, among others, will be the guest artist in residence.   • The School of Music and Ellis Family Music and Ellis Family Music Company, Inc. HURRICANE VOLLEYBALL CAMP

The 2003 Hurricane Volleyball Day Camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, at the Knight Sports Center. The camp, for kids ages 10 to 18 years old, offers each athlete the opportunity to develop the fundamentals of the game. The cost is $250, and employees receive a $25 discount. UM ROWING TEAM OFFERS CAMP FOR ADULTS

Learn to row on the beautiful Miami Beach waterways this summer at the Shane Watersports Center Summer Rowing Camps for Adults. All sessions are taught by UM rowing team staff. Learn the basics of rowing, and by the end of the two-week camp, you'll be able to row in a shell as part of a crew with other campers.   • Lee Shinasi of the School of Law will participate in a debate on the Patriot Act II, 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, at Books and Books in Coral Gables. The Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003 has been called "Patriot Act II" in that it proposes to extend Government powers granted under USA Patriot Act, passed by Congress shortly after the attacks on September 11, 2001. After the Pro and Con debate, there will be time to have discussion among the speakers and the audience.

  • The Employee Assistance Program's seminar Coping in These Troubled Times, 12:30 to 2 p.m., Thursday, June 5, on the Medical campus, offers practical tips and strategies for coping in this unusually stressful time in America. Learn to recognize how war and violence can impact people, identify the signs and symptoms of stress, develop ways of coping, and identify useful resources.
