OF MEDICINE FOR ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

Governor Jeb Bush will lead a roundtable at the School of Medicine, 9 a.m., Monday, June 9. Dean John G. Clarkson, M.D., medical students, medical residents, and Governor Bush will discuss the medical malpractice crisis facing Florida. REMINDER: MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY ON CAMPUS BEGINNING TODAY

The mobile mammography van will be available at the Gables, Medical, and Rosenstiel School campuses for female faculty and staff at the times and locations listed below. The examination is free of charge to faculty and staff enrolled in the University health care plan, and you must present your United ID card at the time of service. Medical campus employees should note the change of location since the last announcement.

EXHIBITS OF CONTEMPORARY CUBA, ADOLPH GOTTLIEB SET TO OPEN

Cuba: ¡Imaginate!, a photography exhibition documenting contemporary life in Cuba, will be on view at Casa Bacardi, UM's Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, from Tuesday, June 10, to Sunday, September 14. The exhibit includes more than 50 photographs by Cuban-American photographer Roy Llera, a photojournalist who through his work has documented the Cuban people and their daily struggle. For more information, read the news release. Over at the Lowe, The Beginning of Seeing: Adolph Gottlieb and Tribal Art, will be on exhibit from Saturday, June 14, through Sunday, July 27. Organized by The New Britain Museum of American Art, the exhibition explores the strong connections between the pictographs of Adolph Gottlieb and African, pre-Columbian, and Native American art. The School of Business Administration presents Groups in Crisis Situations, A True Story: Work in Team-Leadership-Motivation, 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, in the Storer Auditorium. Presented in Spanish, Roberto Canessa, a survivor of the Andres plane crash some 30 years ago, will offer his insights of how the group united in this crisis situation. Only 29 of the 45 passengers were able to survive the accident in the mountains and then live for days in temperatures at 30 degrees below zero with no food. LEARN THE ESSENTIALS OF POPULAR COMPUTER PROGRAMS THIS SUMMER

The NGJ Information Systems Institute will offer a two-day class in Crystal Reports and a one-day class in Project 2002 during the summer. If you are interested in attending these classes, call 305-284-2100 or send an e-mail.

  • Crystal Reports Design and Development - Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10 and 11
    Learn the skills necessary for typical report generation. The report design concepts involved in creating a new report will be covered, as well as a review of the basics of record selection, sorting, grouping, and summarizing. Formatting skills and conditional reporting tools necessary to create presentation-quality reports are also topics in the class. A key component that will be covered is working with the Formula Editor. This class is designed for managers and staff directly involved in creating, maintaining and reporting to management and customers. Cost is $600 and includes a book and refreshments.
  • Project 2002 (Intro) - Tuesday, July 8
    The class covers not only the basics of the program, but also emphasizes the reporting functions of this popular package. In addition to these sessions, NGJ will also offer an advanced Project 2002 later in the summer. Cost is $250 and includes a book and refreshments.

AQUATICS SPORTS CAMP

Randy Ableman, head diving coach, will offer the Cane Aquatics Sports Camp at the Whitten Student Center Outdoor Pool, beginning Monday, June 9, and running for seven one-week sessions ending on Friday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Instruction will be given in the areas of swimming, springboard diving, and trampoline for children ages five to 12. Other programs include swim lessons, swim team for children and adults, and diving camp and lessons. Cost is $160 per week, discounts are available, and a registration fee required. WEB DESIGN FOR TEENAGERS

The Computer and Technology Group is offering a three-week Web design course for teenagers, Monday, June 16, through Thursday, July 3. Students will participate in a variety of musical activities, including chamber music, small jazz group, composition, band, computer, studio recording, improvisation, steel drum ensemble, musical theater, creative movement, and instrumental ensembles. The 2003 Hurricane Volleyball Day Camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, at the Knight Sports Center. The camp, for kids ages 10 to 18 years old, offers each athlete the opportunity to develop the fundamentals of the game. The cost is $250, and employees receive a $25 discount. UM ROWING TEAM OFFERS CAMP FOR ADULTS

Learn to row on the beautiful Miami Beach waterways this summer at the Shane Watersports Center Summer Rowing Camps for Adults. All sessions are taught by UM rowing team staff. Learn the basics of rowing, and by the end of the two-week camp, you'll be able to row in a shell as part of a crew with other campers.   • On Thursday, June 12, the Convocation Center will host three high school graduation ceremonies: at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 8 p.m. As a result, traffic flow on Ponce de Leon Boulevard and parking in the Ponce de Leon and Pavia garages is expected to be a little heavier than usual. Wellness Center patrons may find their parking plans impacted as well, and it is recommended that they allot additional time when visiting the center on this date.   • Beginning Tuesday, June 17, the Wellness Center will offer a conditioning program designed exclusively for golf enthusiasts. The golf program utilizes two patented machines available on the PGA tour trailer -- the Med-X stretch and rotary torso machines. The program, which is open to both Wellness Center members and non-members, includes a pre/post golf swing velocity analysis, 16 training sessions (every Tuesday and Thursday for eight weeks), and in-depth training instruction with stability and medicine balls.   • On Thursday, June 19, UM alumni, employees, and friends are invited to City Theatre's Summer Shorts Festival at The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre Alvin Sherman Family Stage for a special price of $22 per ticket.
