United Way Fundraising Events

Many departments are holding fundraisers for the United Way campaign during the next several weeks. e-Veritas will highlight these events in a "United Way Fundraisers and Events" box at the bottom of every Monday's edition.

SHOW YOUR SPIRIT WITH A UM TAG

When it's time to renew your vehicle's license plate, why not show your Hurricane Spirit with a University of Miami collegiate plate? When you renew your registration at your local tax collector's office, simply let them know you wish to replace your current tag with a specialty license plate. If it is not time to replace the metal plate (every five years), you will pay a few additional dollars. The UM specialty tags cost an additional $25, which goes back to UM. WEEKEND SYMPOSIUM ON TOWN PLANNING

Mark your calendars for Civic Art 2002, Friday - Sunday, October 4-6, a symposium on town planning sponsored by the Knight Program in Community Building and the School of Architecture. The event features presentations and panel discussions by internationally renowned authors, architects, and planners on the historical and contemporary meanings of civic art. It will be held at The Wolfsonian Museum, 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. COLLOQUIUM EXAMINES EXODUS THEMES

The Department of Religious Studies' 2002 Fall Colloquium, The African-American Interpretation of The Exodus, features Dr. David Kling, associate professor of the Department of Religious Studies, who will be discussing a chapter from his upcoming book The Bible in History,12:15-1:15 p.m., today, October 3 in Ashe 705. He will be focusing his attention on the African American appropriation of Exodus themes, including its use in slave spirituals, slave revolts, nationalist expressions, "The Great Migration", and civil rights. OPEN ENROLLMENT, BENEFITS FAIR DATES ANNOUNCED

Online Open Enrollment for the 2003 calendar year begins Monday, October 21 and runs through Friday, November 8. Again this year, Open Enrollment can only be completed online through “Your Benefits Link” at www.benefits.miami.edu. You will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete Open Enrollment. If you do not have a PIN, or forgot it, logon to “Your Benefits Link” by using your most recent Net Pay from paycheck.

The 2003 Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will run from Monday - Friday, October 21 - 25. Attend the Fair to receive updated information on your benefits and provider companies.

COURSES HELP ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS LEARN COMPUTER SKILLS

If your school-aged children need to learn or brush-up on their basic computing and word processing skills, then Computers for Academic Success is the answer. These classes include keyboarding, word processing, and Internet research skills, and are designed with the tasks of elementary and middle-school students in mind. These two-hour classes meet once a week for four weeks, both after school and on Saturdays in Allen Hall. Course tuition is $135.00 (including materials), but UM employees are eligible for a 10% discount. Classes begin in October. HAVE LUNCH WITH COACH COKER

The Dade Coach's Luncheon Series, presented by All Sports, is from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m., Monday, October 7, at the Founder's Hall. Special guests are volleyball coach Nicole Lantagne-Welch and tight end Kellen Winslow. Lunches are held Mondays after every home game, and feature a buffet-style lunch, question and answer period with Larry Coker, and game recap. UM BASKETBALL LAUNCHES NEW ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

The Hurricanes are set to let loose another wave of excitement with its 2002 basketball advertising campaign. This multimedia campaign spreads the message that the Hurricanes are back, mightier than ever, and ready to take it to the paint inside the new home of Hurricanes basketball - the Convocation Center. Like the football campaign, the basketball television commercial features state-of-the-art animation sequences. View the commercial here. On January 4, 2003, the Hurricanes will play their first game inside the Convocation Center, against the North Carolina Tarheels.

Courses teaching:
At the undergraduate level, Digital Audio with about 40 students in the class. UM was the first school to ever offer this class in the early 80s; and Introduction of Music Engineering with 20 freshman. At the graduate level, Advanced Digital Audio with three students; and Audio for producers with 10-12 students.

Favorite spot on campus: Sitting out by the lake (by the Rathskeller).

Most memorable UM moment: When I was hired as a new faculty member and drove my motorcycle from Illinois to Miami with all my belongings in 1977. I remember thinking that UM was going to be a great place to work.

Current reading:
Killing Dragons: The Conquest of the Alps by Fergus Fleming.

Dream vacation: I just realized it this past summer - I spent two weeks backpacking in the Swiss Alps.

AWARD WINNING POET, PLAYWRIGHT TO READ FROM COLLECTION

Poet and playwright Jay Wright will read from his collection of poems at 4 p.m., Thursday, October 10 in 427 Ashe Building. Wright has received numerous awards, including a 2000 Lannan Literary Award for Poetry, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the 62nd Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets. Refreshments will be served. HORTICULTURAL WORKSHOP AND PLANT DIAGNOSTIC CLINIC

The Gifford Arboretum is hosting another horticultural workshop and plant diagnostic clinic on Saturday, October 12 at the John C. Gifford Arboretum, Biology Department, Cox Science Building. Co-sponsored with Miami-Dade Cooperative Extension Service, the workshop features lectures about innovative uses cycads, underused palms for the South Florida landscape, and identification and use of palms in the landscape. The workshop will include a tour of the UM Palmetum. The plant diagnostic clinic, which is free, runs from 8:30 - 10 a.m. The workshop requires a registration fee and is from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., with lunch provided. AWARDS TO FUND DRUG ABUSE AND AIDS RESEARCH

UM's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and the Drug Abuse and AIDS Research Center (DAARC) is distributing developmental awards to support new investigator research on drug abuse and AIDS. A budget of $89,000 has been set aside for these projects, and the goal is to fund four to five projects with a maximum award for any individual project of $25,000. The specific goal of these grants is to support the planning and analysis of data that will lead to the funding of new NIH research grants. A condition of funding by the DAARC will be the explicit commitment to apply for a NIH research grant (e.g., K-award, R03, R21, R01) within 12 months of the end of the UM-funded project period. EXTREME ETHICS CONFERENCE SET FOR OCTOBER

This NIH-supported research ethics conference, Extreme Ethics, now in its third year, will be October 24-26 at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay Hotel. The conference has two tracks, one emphasizes Foundations: Elements of High Quality IRB Review and the other, from which the course draws its name, addresses exceptionally difficult challenges in research on human subjects and in public health. LECTURE LOOKS AT CONTEMPORARY VIDEO ART

The Department of Art and Art History hosts Michael Rush, chief curator and first Director of the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, 7 p.m., today, October 3 at the Learning Center, room 180 to present a lecture on Media Millennium: Media & Performance in Contemporary Video Art. Rush is an experimental theater and video artist and a critic who has published more than 300 articles and reviews on contemporary artists, especially those working in video, film, digital art, and performance. CUBAN BALLET MAKES NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE AT FESTIVAL MIAMI

The North American premiere of Cecilia Valdes, A Cuban Ballet will occur at 8 p.m., Saturday, October 5 (a second show will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, October 6) at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 West Flagler Street, as part of the School of Music's Festival Miami. MEN'S AND WOMEN'S FREE CHORALE CONCERT

The UM Collegium Musicum, the 30-voice Men's Chorale and 100-voice Women's Chorale will present a free concert of highly diverse choral music, 4 p.m., Sunday, October 6, the Coral Gables Congregational Church (3010 DeSoto Boulevard). The evening will begin with Collegium Musicum, under the direction of Steven Armstrong and Gary Keating, presenting early works from Palestrina to Mozart. The Women's Chorale, under the direction of Mandy Mikita-Scott and Daniel J.Hall, will present an array of folk songs, lullabies and sacred works. The Men's Chorale will also present a wide range of repertoire - from Protest and Prayer by Alan Hovhaness to Zion's Walls by Aaron Copland. The breakfast gives students the opportunity to interact and network with Hispanic faculty, administrators and staff. Guest speaker, Esperanza B. de Varona, Director of the Cuban Heritage Collection, will discuss the history of Hispanics and their influence at UM.
