NOMINATIONS FOR 2003 EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARDS SOUGHT

The deadline for nominations for the 2003 Excellence in Teaching Awards is Monday, November 25. All full-time faculty members who teach undergraduate or graduate students and have been teaching at UM for at least three years are eligible. There will be seven awards, each consisting of a $4,000 honorarium plus $2,000 for faculty development related to teaching. Nomination letters should be sent to the Teaching Awards Committee, Instructional Advancement Center, 249 Merrick Building, Locator Code 2047. CONSTRUCTION FORCES ROAD CLOSURE

Beginning today, October 21, and for approximately 3 weeks, a portion of Dickinson Drive will be closed between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday, for construction work. Police will be routing the traffic through the Wellness Center parking lot. Dickinson Drive will be open as usual during all other hours. If you have any questions, contact Jose H. DESIGN A SHIRT TO PROTEST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The Women's Resource Center is sponsoring The Clothesline Project, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, October 23 & 24, on the University Center Plaza/Rock. The Clothesline Project is an artistic protest of violence against women. Students, faculty, and staff can design t-shirts representing women they know who have been victims of violence. Shirts can be designed in advance in the Women's Resource Center (UC Room 224) or during the event. There is no cost to design a shirt. For more information, contact Tricia Shatley.


EXTREME ETHICS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK

This NIH-supported research ethics conference, Extreme Ethics, now in its third year, will be held Thursday - Saturday, October 24-26 at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay Hotel. The conference has two tracks, one emphasizes Foundations: Elements of High Quality IRB Review and the other, from which the course draws its name, addresses exceptionally difficult challenges in research on human subjects and in public health. Topics include genetics, HIPAA, biostatistics and bioinformatics. The conference brochure and program are available on line at www.miami.edu/ethics. TWO WEEK BENEFITS OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD BEGINS TODAY, BENEFITS FAIRS HELD THIS WEEK ON ALL THREE CAMPUSES

Online Open Enrollment for the 2003 calendar year begins today, October 21 and runs through Friday, November 8. Again this year, Open Enrollment can only be completed online through “Your Benefits Link” at www.benefits.miami.edu. You will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete Open Enrollment. If you do not have a PIN, or forgot it, log on to “Your Benefits Link” by using your most recent Net Pay from paycheck.

The 2003 Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will run from Monday - Friday, October 21 - 25. Attend the Fair to receive updated information on your benefits and provider companies. Bring your raffle tickets from the Benefits Update October issue to the vendor booths to enter to win many prizes. Flu shots will be available from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose testing will be available during fair hours.

NEW FLEXIBLE SPENDING ADMINISTRATOR AND FEATURES FOR 2003

Fringe Benefits Management Company (FBMC) will replace CoreSource as the administrator for the Flexible Spending Accounts Program (FSA) in 2003. FBMC will provide participants the EZ REIMBURSE MasterCard feature for the Flexible Spending medical care accounts. You must activate the card before you are allowed access to the fund in your Medical FSA. The funds will be taken directly from your Medical FSA account (if eligible). FBMC will also provide direct deposit for all reimbursement claims, including dependent care expenses. Participants will have access to personal reimbursement claim information via www.fbmc-benefits.com. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY WINTER SYMPOSIUM

Save the date for the Miami Nature Biotechnology Winter Symposium, 50 Years On: From the Double Helix to Molecular Medicine, to be held at the Miami Beach Radisson Deauville Resort, February 1 - 5, 2003. Register now for UM tuition remission and workshops. You also can submit posters for presentation, and abstracts will be published on-line. Exhibit space also is available. The event will honor James Watson and Francis Crick, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. Dr. Watson will give the conferences opening address, Finding the Double Helix. The School of Medicine's 50th anniversary will be celebrated at the conference, as well. ONLY TWO HOME GAMES LEFT FOR FOOTBALL TEAM

You only have two chances left to see the No. 1 ranked and defending national champs 'Canes on the home turf at the Orange Bowl. The 'Canes take on the University of Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21. To end the regular season, the 'Canes host the Hookies of Virginia Tech, currently ranked third in the nation. RAPE DEFENSE CLASS OFFERED BY PUBLIC SAFETY

The Department of Public Safety presents a 12-hour women's course R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense), 6 - 10 p.m., November 4, 5, and 8 at the UC. R.A.D. is a personal safety/violence prevention course offering basic education from risk reduction and avoidance to basic physical self-defense techniques designed specifically for women of all ages. Preregistration is necessary as seating is limited. Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, or workout clothes. For information on registering and fees contact Betty Helms.

UM's NGJ Information Systems Institute is offering introductory and advanced classes for two popular Microsoft programs, Visio and Project 2000. Microsoft Visio helps you communicate your message through diagrams and flow charts, while Project 2000 is a project management and reporting software. CONTROLLER'S OFFICE - BACK YARD BARBECUE
The Controller’s Office 13th Annual Back Yard Barbecue Fund Raiser for United Way will be held in the parking lot behind the Max Orovitz Building, from 12 - 2 p.m., Friday, November 8. Italian sausage subs, chicken breast sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs with all the trimming plus various side dishes such as homemade baked beans, cole slaw, tossed salad, corn on the cob, chips and other sides will be available. To top off your meal try a luscious homemade dessert. Come by to eat, chat and have a good time while contributing to a great cause. Combination Platters which include a drink plus two sides range in price from $3.50 for a hot dog combo to $5.00 for an Italian Sausage Sub or Chicken Breast Sandwich Combo Plate. SCHOOL OF EDUCATION - WALK-A-PET-ATHON

The School of Education will hold its annual Walk-A-Pet-Athon to raise funds for the United Way, from 3 - 5 p.m., Friday, November 15. Registration is from 3 - 3:30 and walking promptly at 3:30. Bring your pet to work (they love to socialize) and raise money for United Way. All you have to do is find a few people to sponsor you and your pet. NORTH-SOUTH CENTER - ONLINE AUCTION
The Dante B. Fascell North-South Center is conducting an online auction to benefit the United Way. The auction is open to the UM community only, and all items will need to be picked up from the Center at the end of the auction. The auction ends Friday, November 15.


SCHOOL OF EDUCATION - THANKSGIVING REHEARSAL LUNCHEON
