NOMINATIONS
FOR 2003 EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARDS SOUGHT
The
deadline for nominations for the 2003 Excellence in
Teaching Awards is Monday, November 25. All full-time
faculty members who teach undergraduate or graduate
students and have been teaching at UM for at least three
years are eligible. There will be seven awards, each
consisting of a $4,000 honorarium plus $2,000 for faculty
development related to teaching. Nomination letters
should be sent to the Teaching Awards Committee, Instructional
Advancement Center, 249 Merrick Building, Locator Code

CONSTRUCTION
FORCES ROAD CLOSURE
Beginning
today, October 21, and for approximately 3 weeks,
a portion of Dickinson Drive will be closed between
8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday, for construction work.
Police will be routing the traffic through the Wellness
Center parking lot. Dickinson Drive will be open as
usual during all other hours. If you have any questions,

DESIGN
A SHIRT TO PROTEST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
The
Women's Resource Center is sponsoring The Clothesline
Project, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday,
October 23 & 24, on the University Center Plaza/Rock.
The Clothesline Project is an artistic protest of violence
against women. Students, faculty, and staff can design
t-shirts representing women they know who have been
victims of violence. Shirts can be designed in advance
in the Women's Resource Center (UC Room 224) or during
the event. There is no cost to design a shirt. For more

EXTREME
ETHICS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK
This
NIH-supported research ethics conference, Extreme
Ethics, now in its third year, will be held Thursday
- Saturday, October 24-26 at the Sheraton Biscayne
Bay Hotel. The conference has two tracks, one emphasizes
Foundations: Elements of High Quality IRB Review
and the other, from which the course draws its name,
addresses exceptionally difficult challenges in research
on human subjects and in public health. Topics include
genetics, HIPAA, biostatistics and bioinformatics. The

begins today, October 21 and runs
through Friday, November 8. Again
this year, Open Enrollment can only be completed
online through Your Benefits Link
at www.benefits.miami.edu.
You will need a Personal Identification
Number (PIN) to complete Open Enrollment.
If you do not have a PIN, or forgot it,
log on to Your
Benefits Link by using your most
recent Net Pay from paycheck.
The
2003 Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will
run from Monday - Friday, October 21
- 25. Attend the Fair to receive updated

NEW
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ADMINISTRATOR AND FEATURES
FOR 2003
Fringe
Benefits Management Company (FBMC) will
replace CoreSource as the administrator
for the Flexible Spending Accounts Program
(FSA) in 2003. FBMC will provide participants
the EZ REIMBURSE MasterCard feature for
the Flexible Spending medical care accounts.
You must activate the card before you are
allowed access to the fund in your Medical
FSA. The funds will be taken directly from
your Medical FSA account (if eligible).
FBMC will also provide direct deposit for
all reimbursement claims, including dependent
care expenses. Participants will have access
to personal reimbursement claim information
via www.fbmc-benefits.com.

50 Years On: From the Double Helix to Molecular Medicine,

RAPE DEFENSE
CLASS OFFERED BY PUBLIC SAFETY
The
Department of Public Safety presents a 12-hour women's
course R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense), 6 - 10 p.m.,
November 4, 5, and 8 at the UC. R.A.D. is a personal
safety/violence prevention course offering basic education
from risk reduction and avoidance to basic physical
self-defense techniques designed specifically for women
of all ages. Preregistration is necessary as seating
is limited. Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, or

Yard Barbecue Fund Raiser for United Way

and hot dogs with all the trimming plus
various side dishes such as homemade baked

Walk-A-Pet-Athon to raise funds for the
