LAW SCHOOL
RENAMES SUMMER INSTITUTE IN PROFESSOR'S NAME
The
School of Law honored longtime professor Robert H. Waters,
who died in September after a long battle with cancer,
on Friday with a memorial service. At the service, which
drew members of the legal community, alumni, family
and friends, it was announced that the James Weldon
Johnson Summer Institute, a summer enrichment program
for students entering law school that Waters founded,
would be renamed for him. The first African-American
professor to join the School of Law faculty, Waters
served for 30 years and helped found the Woodson-Williams-Marshall
Association for black faculty and administrators here

TAKE
NOTE OF BI-WEEKLY PAY SCHEDULE FOR UPCOMING HOLIDAYS
Employees
who are paid on a bi-weekly basis should note the following
changes to the pay schedule, with regards to the 2002
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Paychecks will
be distributed on Wednesday, November 27, to
account for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday,
November 28. Likewise, payday will fall on Monday,
December 23, to account for the Christmas Day holiday.
Paydays for employees paid on a monthly basis will continue
to occur on the last working day of each month. Visit

Online
Open Enrollment for the 2003 calendar year
ends Friday, November 8. If you haven't
already done so, this is your last opportunity
to review your current benefits information
and make any changes if necessary. Again
this year, Open Enrollment can only be completed

You will need a Personal Identification
Number (PIN) to complete Open Enrollment.

FREE OSTEOPOROSIS
BONE DENSITY SCREENING PROGRAM
Did
you know that every 20 seconds osteoporosis causes a
fracture, and one in two women and one in five men have
a lifetime risk of a fracture due to osteoporosis? The
Department of Wellness and Recreation is offering free
osteoporosis bone density screenings to all UM faculty,
staff and dependents on the dates below. Appointments
must be made in advance by calling 305-243-3209.

UM
BEATS WEST VIRGINIA, PREPARES FOR RUTGERS
The UM football team took care of the
Mountaineers of West Virginia, 40-23,
as they continue their march to the
national championship game in Tempe,
Arizona. This week the 'Canes will travel
to Piscataway, New Jersey, to take on
BIG EAST opponent Rutgers University
at noon, Saturday, November 2.
The game will be shown on ESPN Regional.

THE BIG EAST SOCCER TOURNAMENT LIVE
On
Saturday, November 2, the UM
womens soccer team will be hosting
the first round of the BIG EAST tournament.
Game time versus the yet-to-be determined
opponent is scheduled for 7 p.m. The
winner advances to the semifinal game
in Storrs, Connecticut, where the BIG
EAST Champion will be crowned. Tickets
are just $4 for adults, $2 for kids.

QUIT COLD
TURKEY AND GET A HOT TURKEY LUNCH
Need
to quit smoking or know someone who does? The Department
of Wellness and Recreation is hosting a series of luncheons
during the week of November 17. All you need to do is
"adopt a smoker" and you and your adopted
friend will be honored at a special luncheon featuring
hot turkey with all the trimmings. During the luncheon,
receive tips for quitting, a Quit Kit and learn about
UM's six-week BeSmokeFree Program. Those interested

LECTURE
OFFERS PRESENTATION ON HEPATIC CHEMOEMBOLIZATION
The
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center presents the third
annual Egozi Memorial Lecture, 12 - 1 p.m., Friday,
November 8, in Sylvester Conference Room 1301. Honoring
the late Miami businessman David Egozi, the lecture
will provide information on new therapies, particularly
radiolabelled octreotide. Distinguished guest lecturer
Timothy W.I. Clark, M.D., assistant professor of radiology
and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, will
discuss "Hepatic Chemoembolization." All faculty

The
Controllers Office 13th Annual Back
Yard Barbecue Fund Raiser for United Way
will be held in the parking lot behind the
Max Orovitz Building, from 12 - 2 p.m.,
Friday, November 8. Italian sausage
subs, chicken breast sandwiches, hamburgers,
and hot dogs with all the trimming plus
various side dishes such as homemade baked
beans, cole slaw, tossed salad, corn on
the cob, chips and other sides will be available.

The School of Education will hold its annual
Walk-A-Pet-Athon to raise funds for the

your pet to work (they love to socialize)
and raise money for United Way. All you

The Dante B. Fascell North-South Center

THANKSGIVING REHEARSAL LUNCHEON

School of Education will have a repeat of
