BRAMAN BREAST CANCER INSTITUTE ESTABLISHED AT SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

The UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center launched a new era in breast cancer research and care yesterday with the creation of the Braman Breast Cancer Institute, made possible by a $5 million gift from the Norman and Irma Braman Family Foundation. Recruited to lead the initiative is world-renowned breast cancer researcher Joyce Slingerland, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Toronto. Read more.


CONVOCATION CENTER CONSTRUCTION FORCES ROAD CLOSURE

Due to the construction work at the Convocation Center, the west end of Walsh Avenue will be closed for approximately three weeks. Access to the Serpentine Lot will not be accessible from the east end of Walsh Avenue (close to Merrick Drive). The gate on Dickinson Drive will be left opened with a security guard stationed to control access into Dickinson Drive. ONLINE OPEN ENROLLMENT CONTINUES

Online Open Enrollment for the 2003 calendar year runs through Friday, November 8. Again this year, Open Enrollment can only be completed online through “Your Benefits Link” at www.benefits.miami.edu. You will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete Open Enrollment. If you do not have a PIN, or forgot it, log on to “Your Benefits Link” by using your most recent Net Pay from paycheck.


MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR 30-YEAR FACULTY MEMBER

Beloved faculty member of 30 years Marion Jefferson, Associate Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, passed away unexpectedly on October 24. A memorial service for the University community will be held from 3 - 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 5, in the Lowe Art Museum. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.


Did you know that UM recently opened a new facility at the Richmond campus in southwest Miami-Dade that conducts research using remotely sensed data from earth-orbiting satellite systems (i.e. they have a REALLY BIG satellite dish)? The Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Sensing (CSTARS) is part of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and is located on the property that was once the U.S. Naval Observatory Secondary National Time Standard Facility. To learn more, read about in the October issue of the Office of Research's publication Research Notes.

WELLNESS CENTER BLOOD DRIVE

PRESENTATION TO FOCUS ON NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH

HURRICANE VOLLEYBALL BACK IN ACTION THIS WEEKEND

Hurricane Volleyball team is back in action this weekend as they play host to the Red Storm of St. John's at 7 p.m., Friday, November 1 and UConn at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 3. Current courses: Play Analysis - It's a seminar style primarily for theater majors but open to all students. I have about 20 juniors and seniors. In addition to this class, I directed The Laramie Project this semester.

Favorite spot on campus: Being in the rehearsal studio with my students teaching and rehearsing - it's what I love to do.

Most memorable UM moment: President Shalala appearing on the Ring Theatre stage in the Miami Vaudeville of 1926 as part of UM's 75th Anniversary festivities last year.

SHOW YOUR SPIRIT WITH A UM TAG

When it's time to renew your vehicle's license plate, why not show your Hurricane Spirit with a University of Miami collegiate plate? When you renew your registration at your local tax collector's office, simply let them know you wish to replace your current tag with a specialty license plate. If it is not time to replace the metal plate (every five years), you will pay a few additional dollars. The UM specialty tags cost an additional $25, which goes back to UM. AESTHETICS MEETING HOSTED BY ARTS AND SCIENCES

The 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetics will be held until Saturday, November 2 at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables and on the Coral Gables campus. VISITING SCHOLAR SERIES HOSTS ELIZABETH HALL

The Department of Art and Art History's Visiting Scholar lecture series is hosting Elizabeth Hall, 7 p.m., Thursday, November 7, in the Learning Center Room 180. Hall was trained as a painter and photographer, but as her work developed, she began to explore the body, gender, and sexuality through performance, video, and installations that incorporated looping single-track video, video projection, and handmade costumes. THE SKY ABOVE US ON DISPLAY ON CAMPUS

The College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of Art and Art History present an on-campus outdoor art installation titled The Sky Above Us, November 15-27, created by artists Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt. A reception for the artists will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, November 15 at the Palm Court at the end of Memorial Drive. NEW SCHOOL OF MUSIC FACULTY MEMBER TO PERFORM

Renowned classical pianist Tian Ying, a new faculty member at the School of Music, will bring his virtuosic playing to Gusman Hall in his Miami debut at 8 p.m., Saturday, November 9, and feature works by Chopin and Liszt.   • If your school-aged children need to learn or brush-up on their basic computing and word processing skills, then Computers for Academic Success is the answer. These classes include keyboarding, word processing, and Internet research skills, and are designed with the tasks of elementary and middle-school students in mind. These two-hour classes meet once a week for four weeks, both after school and on Saturdays in Allen Hall. Course tuition is $135.00 (including materials), but UM employees are eligible for a 10% discount.   • The Department of Public Safety presents a 12-hour women's course R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense), 6 - 10 p.m., November 4, 5, and 8 at the UC. R.A.D. is a personal safety/violence prevention course offering basic education from risk reduction and avoidance to basic physical self-defense techniques designed specifically for women of all ages. Preregistration is necessary as seating is limited. Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, or workout clothes. For information on registering and fees contact Betty Helms.
