Jonathan
Simon, professor, School of Law
Current courses: Substance of Criminal
Law and Wrongful Conviction, a workshop.
Favorite
spot on campus: The little sunken
garden to the east of the Ashe Building.
It's a hide-a-way that not many people
know about and I can reflect and meditate.
Most memorable UM moment: In 1995,
there was an unfortunate incident at the
law school where some minority student
records were stolen by students who were
against affirmative action. In a show
of solidarity and support for the minority
students, the law school student body
held a rally on the bricks. It was a time
where all the faculty, staff and students
got together and expressed unity. The
whole experience was very humbling to
me as a teacher since our students showed
great insight in their intuitive response.
Current
reading:
I just finished reading The Cold
6,000 by James Elroy. It's a novel
that tries to imagine the dark underbelly
of American politics in the 1960s with
a heavy emphasis on the links between
crime and government, which is very much
the period, and theme I am currently writing
a (hopefully) non-fiction book on.
CDs
you're listening to: Time Out of
Mind by Bob Dylan.
Dream
vacation: Go on a tour of the Caribbean
and Latin America.
Way
to start the day: Peets or Starbucks
coffee, the front section of The New
York Times and the Metro section of
the Miami Herald.
