GRAMMY-NOMINATED DESMOND CHILD AT SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The art of songwriting will be featured center stage at the School of Music when Desmond Child's "Master Class in Songwriting" is presented at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 7 p.m., Thursday, November 21. Child, known for writing and producing Ricky Martin's #1 worldwide smash hits Livin' La Vida Loca and The Cup of Life will be joined by guest artist Andreas Carlson, known for writing N'Sync's #1 hit Bye, Bye, Bye. The evening will consist of an informal setting and discussions on the craft of songwriting as well as a Q&A from the audience. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. NEW PROGRAM PUTS MUSCLE
INTO SCIENCE EDUCATION

A new program by the School of Education is taking children’s fascination with sports, games and physical activity to the next level. The Laboratory of Clinical & Applied Physiology has launched a pilot project at Ponce de Leon Middle School, 5801 Augusto Street, in Coral Gables to help provide students a better understanding of the link between science and physical education. CI TEAM SAVES UM $370,000

The Coral Gables Housing Turnover Team, a Continuous Improvement group, recently came with a plan that resulted in saving UM $370,000.00 in housing turnover costs while maintaining high customer satisfaction and improving employee morale. If you want to see how they did it visit the Web page.


DISCUSSION ON PUBLIC EDUCATION FOR HISPANICS ON THE WEB

The Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies and BBCmundo.com invite you to a panel discussion on the state of public education for Hispanics in Florida, which will be broadcast in audio and video on bbcmundo.com, 7 - 9 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, at Casa Bacardi (1531 Brescia Avenue). UM PREPARES FOR THURSDAY NIGHT GAME

The #1 ranked Miami Hurricanes will return home to the Orange Bowl on Thursday, November 21 to take on the University of Pittsburgh Panthers for the Big East title. HAVE LUNCH WITH COACH COKER

The Dade Coach's Luncheon Series, presented by All Sports, is from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m., Monday, November 25, at the Founder's Hall. Special guests will be linebacker D.J. Williams and Women's track coach Amy Deem. Lunches are held Mondays after every home game, and feature a buffet-style lunch, question and answer period with Larry Coker, and game recap.     The Center for Latin American Studies of the University of Miami, the Latin American and Caribbean Center of Florida International University, and the North-South Center will present the Inter-American Development Bank book, Democracies in Development: Politics and Reform in Latin America, 5 - 7 p.m., Monday, November 18, on the fourth floor of the Law School. Professor Uleman will speak on Politics, Opposition, and Fear. Professor Moore's talk will be on Risks and Rewards of a War with Iraq.

  • The University of Miami Alumni Association (UMAA) invites alumni to stop by the UMAA Spirit Tent prior to the Pittsburgh vs. UM game on Thursday, November 21. The Spirit Tent will be open from 6 - 7 p.m. in Orange Bowl Lot N2 (next to the stadium entrance gate).
