UM FOOTBALL TEAM IN ACTION TONIGHT

The top-ranked 'Canes are at home tonight, November 21, in the Orange Bowl for a 7:30 p.m. match-up against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. The winner of this game will be crowned the BIG EAST champion. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, so lets' all get out there and show the nation who the No. 1 fans are! SPECIAL EDUCATION THE FOCUS OF NEW GRANT

The School of Education was recently awarded an $800,000, four-year grant by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare 10 doctoral students in special education for research and teaching positions in the nation’s universities. The program, Preparing the Special Education Professorate of Tomorrow, addresses the increased need for academic leaders in special education who have specialized knowledge of their discipline, as well as superior scholarship and research skills. SILENT AUCTION TO BENEFIT MORTAR BOARD SENIOR HONOR SOCIETY

Join the UM chapter of the Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society from 5 - 7 p.m., Friday, November 22 for the First Annual "I Came, I Bid, I Won" Silent Auction to benefit the Mortar Board scholarship fund. The auction will take place in the Rathskeller's Lewis Room and winners will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Items to be auctioned include two tickets to the UM vs. Virginia Tech football game, a Kaplan graduate prep course, autographed National Championship footballs, and much more.

UM provides faculty (except UMMG) and staff with Basic Group Life Insurance coverage equal to two times your salary up to a maximum amount of $200,000 (rounded to the nearest $1,000) and Basic Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage equal to one times your salary up to a maximum amount of $100,000 (rounded to the nearest $1,000). You are automatically covered from your first day of active employment. The University pays 100% of the cost.

STUDENTS TO HOLD BLACK LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

United Black Students will be hosting a Black Leadership Summit, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, November 23 on the second floor of the UC. Students, faculty and staff are all invited. CLASSES AVAILABLE FOR POPULAR PROGRAMS

UM's NGJ Information Systems Institute is offering introductory and advanced classes for two popular Microsoft programs, Visio and Project 2000. Microsoft Visio helps you communicate your message through diagrams and flow charts, while Project 2000 is a project management and reporting software. All classes are on the Coral Gables campus and enrollment can be made by calling 305-284-2100 or by e-mail. Enroll early as classes fill quickly.

ATHLETICS FOOD DRIVE BENEFITS DAILY BREAD FOOD BANK

UM and the Daily Bread Food Bank are teaming up to fight hunger. Bring two non-perishable items and receive a reduced ticket price of $7 to see the men's basketball team play the Aggies of Texas A&M on Tuesday, November 26 or $3 to watch the women's basketball team play either South Florida (Friday, November 22) or Morris Brown (Monday, November 25). HAVE LUNCH WITH COACH COKER

The Dade Coach's Luncheon Series, presented by All Sports, is from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m., Monday, November 25, at the Founder's Hall. Special guests will be linebacker D.J. Williams and Women's track coach Amy Deem. Lunches are held Mondays after every home game, and feature a buffet-style lunch, question and answer period with Larry Coker, and game recap. David F. Graf, professor, Department of History

Areas of interest: History and archaeology. My work focuses on the Ancient Greek and Roman Classical world and its relations with the Near East. Specialties are Greek-Persian relations and the Roman Near East. I'm director of UM's program in Classical Antiquity, and have taught at UM for 17 years. I was recently named a Fulbright scholar, and will spend the spring semester in Saudi Arabia.

Favorite spot on campus: Having lunch outdoors at the Rat.

Brushes with greatness: In Petra, Jordan, I had dinner in the same restaurant with Sean Connery and Harrison Ford on the set of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and recently, I met with Jada Pinkett and Will Smith on the set of "Bad Boys II" here in Miami.

Current reading: A number of books for archaeological journals, including En Boqeq: Excavations at an Oasis on the Dead Sea.

CDs you're listening to: Eric Clapton's Blues, Elvis, and some New Orleans jazz.

Favorite part of teaching: I like that UM gives me a real balance of research, teaching, and working with students.

Way to start the day: Get up at 6:30 or 7 a.m., have breakfast with my wife Linda, read the paper.

OPEN HOUSE AT THE SCHOOL OF LAW

The School of Law will host an open house for prospective law students 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 26, at the school. The event will provide students an opportunity to tour the law school complex and to attend panel discussions featuring members of the law school's faculty, student body, and administration. NEW SHOP CATERS TO CANCER PATIENTS

The UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center recently opened a new shop in its lobby called Beautywise, a specialty store that carries a full line of wigs, scarves, turbanes, hats, prosthetics. The certified professional staff can also assist with the fitting of post-mastectomy products, such as breast prosthetics, specialty bras, and bathing suits. Other services include massages, manicures/pedicures, skin consultations, makeovers/makeup consultations. The hours of operation are from 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday -Friday. NOMINATIONS FOR 2003 EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARDS SOUGHT

The deadline for nominations for the 2003 Excellence in Teaching Awards is Monday, November 25. All full-time faculty members who teach undergraduate or graduate students and have been teaching at UM for at least three years are eligible. There will be seven awards, each consisting of a $4,000 honorarium plus $2,000 for faculty development related to teaching. Nomination letters should be sent to the Teaching Awards Committee, Instructional Advancement Center, 249 Merrick Building, Locator Code 2047. 26th ANNUAL UM CERAMICS AREA-- HOLIDAY POTTERY SALE

The Department of Art and Art History and the ceramics area will once again host its annual pottery sale of student work, staff and faculty ceramic work, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, December 2 & 3 in the patio area of the Student Center. Works include stoneware and soda fired utilitarian pieces (lead free and dishwasher safe) such as bowls, serving plates, cups, pitchers, teapots, covered jars. Ceramic/mixed media jewelry, and small sculptures will also be for sale. This event sponsors the ceramics area visiting artists program. The ceramics area has sponsored nationally and internationally recognized ceramic artists for lectures and workshops for 26 years. For information call 305-284-5470.


GRAMMY-NOMINATED DESMOND CHILD AT SCHOOL OF MUSIC TONIGHT

The art of songwriting will be featured center stage at the School of Music when Desmond Child's "Master Class in Songwriting" is presented at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 7 p.m., Thursday, November 21. Child, known for writing and producing Ricky Martin's #1 worldwide smash hits Livin' La Vida Loca and The Cup of Life will be joined by guest artist Andreas Carlson, known for writing N'Sync's #1 hit Bye, Bye, Bye. The evening will consist of an informal setting and discussions on the craft of songwriting as well as a Q&A from the audience. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. UM FACULTY FEATURED IN MIAMI BACH SOCIETY EVENT

The UM Collegium Musicum is featured in the Miami Bach Society presentation of Handel's Four Coronation Anthems, written for the Coronation of King George II, and "O Come Let Us Sing unto the Lord," Chandos Anthem No. 8, one of the first works that Handel wrote when he moved from Germany to England, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, November 24 at Temple Emanu-el, 1701 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Donald Oglesby is conducting, and featured soloists are UM faculty Esther Jane Hardenbergh, soprano, and Richard Kosowski, tenor, joining the Bach Society Chamber Orchestra. NEW COLLECTIONS AT THE LOWE

The Lowe Art Museum presents Florida Visual Art Fellowships: 25th Anniversary Exhibition. Curated by Robert J. Sindelir, founding director of Miami-Dade County's Art in Public Places Program, the exhibition will be on view in Green Galleries from Friday, November 29 through January 19, 2003.
