On Saturday, December 7, the temporary parking lots located behind the Lowe Art Museum and across from the Day Star Health Center will close. Parking is available in the Pavia and Ponce Garages. HOLIDAY DISCOUNT AT THE LOWE

The Lowe Art Museum Store is offering a 20% discount to all UM employees on store purchases over $5 with valid UM ID until Christmas. Museum hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 12 - 7 p.m. on Thursday; and 12 - 5 p.m. on Sunday. Contact Lorrie Stassun at 305-284-6988 for more information.


ART SALE TO BENEFIT UM PROGRAMS

The Department of Art and Art History is hosting a sale of ceramic and glass art created by UM faculty, resident artists, alumni, and students at The Gilded Hand, 165 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables (across from the Colonnade Hotel), 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., Thursday, December 5, 10:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday, December 6, and 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Saturday & Sunday, December 7 & 8. A wine and cheese opening reception will be held from 6:30 - 9 p.m. on Friday. Proceeds from the sale will mutually benefit the artists and the Ceramics and Art Glass programs at UM. Additionally, The Gilded Hand will donate 5% of the proceeds from Friday evening's stock sales to benefit these UM programs. Call 305-442-1445 for additional information.

UM BEATS SYRACUSE; REGULAR SEASON FINALE THIS SATURDAY

After Saturday's (score) beating of the Orangemen from Syracuse University, the BIG EAST champs 'Canes are one win away from playing Ohio State University in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship. The 'Canes regular season finale is this weekend in the Orange Bowl against the Hookies of Virginia Tech. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m., and will be nationally televised on ABC. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting the Hurricane Ticket Office in the Hecht Athletic Center or by calling 1-800-GO-CANES. If you are going, make sure you show the country which university has the No. 1 fans! GO 'CANES!


ANNUAL FOOTBALL BANQUET

You are invited to join Head Football Coach Larry Coker and the football coaching staff as they honor the UM graduating seniors and Outstanding Players, Tuesday, December 10 at the Radisson Mart Plaza Hotel Centre (711 N.W. 72nd Avenue). The event is sponsored by the Hurricane Club together with the Miami Touchdown Club. The Football Banquet will begin with a 6 p.m. cocktail hour and dinner at 7 p.m. The cost to attend this event is $60 per person in advance, $75 at the door, and $480 per table of eight. JUDAIC STUDIES HOSTING LECTURE

The Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies is hosting the Second Annual Robert Russell Memorial Foundation Lecture, titled Words that Hurt, Words that Heal, by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, 8 - 10 p.m., Monday, December 9 at Founders Hall. LECTURE EXAMINES CARIBBEAN RELATIONS

The Miami European Union Center and UM's Dante B. Fascell North-South Center will host a luncheon/seminar on European Union Relations with the Caribbean at noon Monday, December 2 at Founders Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Participants include Anthony T. Bryan, director of Caribbean Programs at the North-South Center; John Caloghirou, head of the EU delegation in Barbados; Ralph Clem, co-director of the Miami European Union Center at Florida International University; Anthony Maingot, professor of sociology at Florida International University; Ambler Moss, North-South director; Joaquin Roy, co-director of the Miami EU Center at UM; and Remco Vahl, of the European Commission's Trade Division. GIVE HOPE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

The UM Butler Volunteer Services Center is hosting its annual Holiday Hope Tree. Pick up a child's request at the UC Information Desk and return all gifts unwrapped to the desk by noon, Wednesday, December 4. Gifts will be sent to participating non-profit agencies below.   • The Salvation Army, which has been running the Angel Tree Program since 1985, distributed more than 30,000 toys last year.
  • South Miami Head Start is a child development program that has served low-income children and their families since 1965. Children from birth through 5 years of age are eligible to participate.
  • The CHARLEE (Children Have All Rights: Legal, Educational, and Emotional) Program has an extensive history of providing for abused and neglected children within Dade County.
  • Flamingo Elementary, a Professional Development School, is a setting where the school faculty has made a commitment to the preparation of teachers, and UM faculty has made a commitment to school improvement.


'CANES ANGEL
PROJECT PROVIDES GIFTS

Making Holiday dreams come true! The Law school's volunteer/community outreach project, H.O.P.E., is once again sponsoring its holiday project 'Canes Angel. This project collects presents for underprivileged children, and this year is working with the Community Partnership for the Homeless Shelters in Dade and Homestead as well as clients from the Children and Youth Law Clinic. More than 300 presents are needed! If you would like to sponsor child, stop by and pick up your 'Canes Angel information or contact the H.O.P.E. office at 305-284-2599 or fax 305-284-3646. Gifts must be turned in by Friday, December 6.


EYEWEAR SAVINGS WITH BASCOM PALMER’S 20/20 VISION CLUB

Optical Services at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute offers exclusive membership to the new 20/20 Vision Club for UM/Jackson employees, students, and immediate family members. All club members pay only $20 for lenses (single-vision or bifocal) and $20 for frames. In addition, club members enjoy 50 percent discounts on specialty lenses and designer frames.   • TODAY: Save a life by becoming a blood donor. The Wellness Center will hold a blood drive from 4 - 9 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, December 2-3 in the atrium. For more information, call the Wellness Suite at 305-284-5433.

    The Department of Art and Art History and the ceramics area will once again host its annual pottery sale of student work, staff and faculty ceramic work, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, December 2 & 3 in the patio area of the Student Center. Works include stoneware and soda fired utilitarian pieces (lead free and dishwasher safe) such as bowls, serving plates, cups, pitchers, teapots, covered jars. Ceramic/mixed media jewelry, and small sculptures will also be for sale. This event sponsors the ceramics area visiting artists program. The ceramics area has sponsored nationally and internationally recognized ceramic artists for lectures and workshops for 26 years. For information call 305-284-5470.

  • The Department of Public Safety presents a 12-hour women's course R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense), 6 - 9 p.m., December 10, 12, 17 & 19 at the Wellness Center. R.A.D. is a personal safety/violence prevention course offering basic education from risk reduction and avoidance to basic physical self-defense techniques designed specifically for women of all ages. Preregistration is necessary as seating is limited. Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, or workout clothes. For information on registering and fees contact Betty Helms.
