The last issue of e-Veritas for the fall semester will be Thursday, December 19, and the first issue of the spring semester will be Monday, January 6. Please take these dates into consideration when submitting items for publication.


'CANES WIN - EARN SECOND CONSECUTIVE UNDEFEATED SEASON

The 'Canes football team took care of the Hokies of Virginia Tech on Saturday, beating them 56-45. The win positions the top-ranked 'Canes for a trip to the Fiesta Bowl for the Friday, January 3 national championship game against the Ohio State University Buckeyes. The Athletics' Web site is your best source for news and information leading up to the big game. Looking for football merchandise? STUDENT-RUN MUSIC PUBLISHING COMPANY LAUNCH

Category 5 Music Publishing, the School of Music's first student-run publishing company, will hold its company unveiling Tuesday, December 10, at Van Dyke Café on Lincoln Road. At the event, which begins at 5 p.m., Category 5 will also introduce its first songwriters, Adrian Gordon and Sam Hooper, who will perform. The event is free and open to the public. UM HOLDS NEW MID-YEAR COMMENCEMENT

For the first time, UM will hold a mid-year Commencement for the more than 700 students graduating this month. Ceremonies will be held on Thursday, December 19 on the Coral Gables Campus. In addition, the School of Medicine will graduate its students from the graduate program in Physical Therapy at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, and the School of Law will hold its Commencement at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, both at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Miami. LECTURE: SCIENCE, ADVOCACY AND ACTIVISM

When scientists hold strong beliefs based upon their research, should they become advocates or even activists, promoting institutional or social change? Hear a discussion on this topic by Lee Crandall, Research Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and Research Professor of Sociology and Family and Community Medicine. It's part of the Dialogues in Research Ethics series of monthly conferences, at noon Friday, December 13, at the Rosenstiel Building 6018 (Pharmacology Conference Room) at the Medical School. ANNUAL FOOTBALL BANQUET

You are invited to join Head Football Coach Larry Coker and the football coaching staff as they honor the UM graduating seniors and Outstanding Players, Tuesday, December 10 at the Radisson Mart Plaza Hotel Centre (711 N.W. 72nd Avenue). The event is sponsored by the Hurricane Club together with the Miami Touchdown Club. The Football Banquet will begin with a 6 p.m. cocktail hour and dinner at 7 p.m. The cost to attend this event is $60 per person in advance, $75 at the door, and $480 per table of eight. FREE COMPUTER TRAINING

End User Support will be offering free computer training classes to faculty and staff beginning Wednesday, January 22. Several new classes will be offered including Introduction to ListServ, PageMaker 6.5, Introduction to Pocket PC's, and Web Development courses. CZECH REPUBLIC LECTURER AT ICCAS

A free lecture will examine Cuban human rights in the context of the foreign policy of the Czech Republic on Tuesday, December 10 from 7-9 p.m. at Casa Bacardi, 1531 Brescia Avenue. Hon. Martin Palouš, Czech Republic Ambassador to the U.S. He was one of the first signatories of Charter 77 and served as spokesman for this dissident human rights group in 1986. Palouš has held a number of teaching positions at Charles University, and is the author of numerous publications. Seating is limited. Reserve now by calling ICCAS at 284-CUBA.


LOWE OFFERS HOLIDAY DISCOUNT

COMPUTER SKILLS CLASSES FOR SCHOOL-AGED KIDS

If your school-aged children need to learn or brush up on their basic computing and word processing skills, Computers for Academic Success is the answer. Classes include keyboarding, word processing, and Internet research skills, and are intensive and fun. The two-hour classes meet once a week for four weeks on Saturdays in Allen Hall. Tuition is $135 (including materials), but UM employees are eligible for a 10 percent discount. January classes begin Saturday, January 4. Registration is now open.   • TONIGHT: The Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies is hosting the Second Annual Robert Russell Memorial Foundation Lecture, titled Words that Hurt, Words that Heal, by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, 8 - 10 p.m. Monday, December 9 at Founders Hall.   • The Department of Public Safety presents a 12-hour women's course R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense), 6 - 9 p.m., December 10, 12, 17 & 19 at the Wellness Center. R.A.D. Is a personal safety/violence prevention course offering basic education from risk reduction and avoidance to basic physical self-defense techniques designed specifically for women of all ages.
