Tech on Saturday, beating them 56-45. The win positions
the top-ranked 'Canes for a trip to the Fiesta Bowl
for the Friday, January 3 national championship

STUDENT-RUN
MUSIC PUBLISHING COMPANY LAUNCH
Category
5 Music Publishing, the School of Music's first student-run
publishing company, will hold its company unveiling
Tuesday, December 10, at Van Dyke Café
on Lincoln Road. At the event, which begins at 5 p.m.,
Category 5 will also introduce its first songwriters,
Adrian Gordon and Sam Hooper, who will perform. The

UM
HOLDS NEW MID-YEAR COMMENCEMENT
For
the first time, UM will hold a mid-year Commencement
for the more than 700 students graduating this month.
Ceremonies will be held on Thursday, December 19
on the Coral Gables Campus. In addition, the School
of Medicine will graduate its students from the graduate
program in Physical Therapy at 10 a.m. on Saturday,
December 14, and the School of Law will hold its
Commencement at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 22,
both at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Miami. For more

SCIENCE, ADVOCACY AND ACTIVISM
When
scientists hold strong beliefs based upon their research,
should they become advocates or even activists, promoting
institutional or social change? Hear a discussion on
this topic by Lee Crandall, Research Professor and Associate
Chair, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health,
and Research Professor of Sociology and Family and Community
Medicine. It's part of the Dialogues in Research Ethics
series of monthly conferences, at noon Friday, December

REPUBLIC LECTURER AT ICCAS
A
free lecture will examine Cuban human rights in the
context of the foreign policy of the Czech Republic
on Tuesday, December 10 from 7-9 p.m. at Casa
Bacardi, 1531 Brescia Avenue. Hon. Martin Palou,
Czech Republic Ambassador to the U.S. He was one of
the first signatories of Charter 77 and served as spokesman
for this dissident human rights group in 1986. Palou
has held a number of teaching positions at Charles University,
and is the author of numerous publications. Seating

COMPUTER
SKILLS CLASSES FOR SCHOOL-AGED KIDS
If
your school-aged children need to learn or brush up
on their basic computing and word processing skills,
Computers for Academic Success is the answer. Classes
include keyboarding, word processing, and Internet research
skills, and are intensive and fun. The two-hour classes
meet once a week for four weeks on Saturdays in Allen
Hall. Tuition is $135 (including materials), but UM
employees are eligible for a 10 percent discount. January
classes begin Saturday, January 4. Registration

course R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense), 6 - 9 p.m.,

and avoidance to basic physical self-defense techniques
designed specifically for women of all ages. Preregistration
