2003
OPEN ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION
2003
Open Enrollment Verification notices are
being mailed via interoffice address this
week. The notice is a verification of the
benefits you have elected for calendar year
2003. Please review the Open Enrollment
Verification notice carefully, and if you
need to make any corrections, fill out the
form, sign it and fax it to Benefits Administration
at 305-284-4568. The deadline to
make any changes to the 2003 Open Enrollment
Verification notice is Friday, December
13. Changes to 2003 benefits will not
be accepted after the deadline.
ASK MR. BILL ABOUT YOUR BENEFITS
Ask
Mr. Bill is the new Benefits Administration
Web page that answers many of your frequently
asked benefit questions. Visit Ask
Mr. Bill this week for questions related
to health care and free-standing facilities.
You may submit questions on this page regarding
UM benefits.
BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS
Benefits
Administration has completed a review of
beneficiary designation forms. Faculty and
staff who do not have a beneficiary form
on file will be sent a letter along with
blank beneficiary designation forms to their
home address. Please compete the beneficiary
form and return to Benefits Administration.
If your martial status has recently changed
or you wish to update your UM beneficiary
forms, visit the Forms
Web page. Print the beneficiary forms,
complete them and mail originals to Benefits
Administration.
NOTIFY BENEFITS ADMINISTRATION IMMEDIATELY
UPON DIVORCE
Federal
courts have held that failure to notify
benefit plan administrators at the time
of divorce is fraud. A recent court case
awarded punitive damages to the employer.
The employee who failed to properly notify
the benefit plan administrator of a divorce
was ordered to pay back health care claims
spent by the employer on behalf of the ex-spouse.
Upon
divorce remember to do the following:
- Contact
Benefits Administration at 305-284-6832.
- Provide
a copy of the final divorce decree from
the court.
- Provide
an updated mailing address, if applicable,
for your ex-spouse.
- You
may wish to consider updating beneficiary
forms for retirement and life insurance
benefits. Beneficiary forms are available
online. Click
here for Forms.

Amy
Clement, assistant professor, Rosenstiel
School of Marine & Atmospheric Science
Current research: My research addresses
some fundamental questions about the behavior
of
the climate system -- how sensitive is
the Earth's climate to external forcing
such as changes in greenhouse gases, or
changes in the solar radiation? How quickly
can the climate change? My focus has generally
been on the tropical ocean-atmosphere
system, and in particular on the El Nino/Southern
Oscillation (ENSO).
Favorite
spot on campus? It's a toss up between
the RSMAS bar, the University pool, and
the Gifford Arboretum, depending on my
energy level and thirst.
Most
memorable UM moment? Walking on campus
in early December without having to wear
boots (I spent most of my life living
in New York).
Current
reading: Letters from the Earth
by Mark Twain.
CDs
currently listening to: Right Time
by the Mighty Diamonds
Way
to start your day: Slowly, and looking
forward to caffeine.
