Momentum campaign gifts create distinguished professorships
UM has received an anonymous gift to its Momentum campaign that will create new professorships to honor outstanding faculty scholars in arts and sciences and architecture. To date, the Momentum campaign has established 22 endowed chairs and professorships; this latest gift will support five new distinguished professorships.
“This generous donation will help recognize the scholarly contributions of some of our most distinguished faculty,” says Executive Vice President and Provost Thomas J. LeBlanc. “Their work enhances the intellectual life of our campus and the education of our students and brings great distinction to our University.”
The new distinguished professors are: Charles S. Carver, Distinguished Professor of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences; David Ellison, Distinguished Professor in the Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences; Howard Gordon, Distinguished Professor of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences; Susan Haack, Distinguished Professor in the Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences; and Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Distinguished Professor of Architecture. Each professorship will fund research that supports the scholarly work of the faculty member.
In addition to these appointments in arts and sciences and architecture, renowned endocrinologist and Nobel Laureate Andrew Schally is joining the faculty as Miller Distinguished Professor in the Miller School of Medicine. Schally’s appointment is supported by the generosity of the family of the late Leonard M. Miller.

Three UM graduate schools rank in top ten list of Hispanic Business Magazine
Three UM graduate schools have been ranked in the top ten list of U.S. schools by Hispanic Business Magazine in their 2006 Diversity Report published in the September issue.
The School of Law, School of Business Administration and the Miller School of Medicine were all cited by the magazine as places that promote and encourage a diverse community where Hispanic students can thrive. Other criteria used for the rankings involved percentage of Hispanic faculty in each school, the number of special programs that recruit Hispanic students, retention rates, and reputation. Hispanic Business Magazine has been publishing its diversity report for the past 18 years.
The School of Law garnered a second-place ranking in the magazine, second only to University of New Mexico Law School. The University of Miami’s School of Law has a long tradition of educating outstanding Hispanic lawyers and leaders of the bench and bar. It offers a strong international business curriculum with particular emphasis on Latin America, and students have the opportunity to learn comparative law in Spanish and to study abroad in Spain.
The School of Business Administration ranked seventh in its category, which included other prestigious programs such as Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Yale University’s School of Management. The School offers an academic curriculum that has long been regarded as one of the most prestigious in the country. Taking advantage of the school’s geographic location and proximity to Latin America, the school offers a Master’s of Science in Professional Management in Spanish that allows Latin American executives and managers the opportunity to study in their language under the tutelage of a talented bilingual and bicultural faculty.
The Miller School of Medicine was ranked fifth best medical school in the country for Hispanic students. The magazine singled out the Miller School’s retention success story with 23 percent of its M.D. degrees earned by Hispanics.
