Firefox creator to speak at UM on Monday
The School of Education will mark the arrival of Dean Isaac Prilleltensky with an event featuring Blake Ross, co-founder of Firefox, with an introduction by humorist and Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry. The event will take place on Monday, October 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the School of Business Administration's Storer Auditorium on the Coral Gables campus. Tickets to the presentation are available for $25. V.I.P. tickets are $100.

The event is intended to raise funds for a dean's endowment, which will support scholarships for students, faculty research, community collaborations, and enhanced University education facilities. The dean’s vision is one of multicultural well-being through education for families, schools, and the community.

At 17, Blake Ross created the free Web browser Firefox, which has since been downloaded by more than 220 million people. This young entrepreneur is currently on leave from Stanford University after recently publishing Firefox for Dummies and founding a new company.

UM strengthens preventive care
coverage in 2007
As part of the UMatter Wellness Initiative Program, all five Humana healthcare plans will include wellness enhancements at no cost to members, effective Monday, January 1, 2007. The Wellness Initiative Program will help members focus on the importance of preventive care and encourage them to monitor and track their well-being. The following wellness services will be provided at no cost: routine physicals, routine immunizations, well child care, well woman exam, breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, prostate cancer screening, osteoporosis screening, and colorectal cancer screening. Launched last year, Green U is a university-wide program coordinated by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety aimed at making UM a community leader in the acquisition of environmentally responsible products and the practice of ecologically sound maintenance and operations procedures.

A new wave of environmental standards
The new 15-story Clinical Research Building at the Miller School of Medicine—the first in a wave of new, green buildings at the University—features a host of environmentally friendly features, including:
  • double-paned, argon-filled glass windows that stay cool even when it’s 90 degrees;
  • a white-sealed roof that reflects sunlight;
  • a raised floor system for better indoor air quality and energy efficiency;
  • floor vents that reduce ductwork and improve air flow;
  • carpet and other internal materials made from recycled and recyclable materials;
  • office lights that turn off automatically when no one’s around.

The event will be emceed by Pamela Wright, weather anchor for Miami's CBS local affiliate, and will include wine, hors d’oeuvres, and the modeling of holiday fashions. A Grand Welcome
Joe Natoli, UM's new senior vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer, greets members of the Board of Trustees along with administrators and faculty during a welcoming reception held on Tuesday at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. Natoli was formerly publisher of Philadelphia Newspapers, LLC, which publishes The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News, Philly.com, and Broad Street Community Newspapers.

Submit direct deposit requests online via MyUM
All employees, including student employees, can now submit payroll direct deposit requests online via myUM. By logging on to the Web site, users can electronically submit new applications, change deposit amounts, and edit bank account preferences. When employees submit a direct deposit request electronically, no paper applications or voided checks are required. Simply visit MyUM and login, hover over the "Employee" tab, and select "Payroll, HR & Misc," from the drop-down menu. The "Direct Deposit" link appears within the Employee Information section.

Decorating tips for the holidays
As the holidays approach, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety would like to remind the University community of some decorating tips:

  • Use UL listed decorative lights and noncombustible or fire-resistant decorations and ornaments.
  • Use artificial holiday trees that are fire-resistant, and place them away from office traffic and doorways.
  • Unplug all holiday lights when you leave the office.
  • Do not hang decorations, ornaments, lights, or use decorative sprays on any fire protection equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, and fire alarm pull boxes.
  • Do not hang materials on or near exits or emergency lights, or in a manner that could present a fall or trip hazard.
  • Do not burn candles, incense, or any other related accessories.
  • Remove all decorations, displays, lights, and ornaments after the holiday event or prior to the University’s annual holiday closure.

Jessica Steward was named the Golfweek Women's Player of the Week on Tuesday.
UM golfer sets new 54-hole scoring record
UM junior Jessica Steward fired a final round 72 to win the GSU/Pelican Preserve Invite in Fort Myers last week.

Steward, who posted scores of 69 and 68 in earlier rounds, finished with a seven-under-par total of 209, establishing the scoring record. The old UM record of 212 was set by Penny Hammel in 1982 and later equaled by Tracy Kerdyk in 1987, Julie Brand in 1992, and Tina Miller in 2005.

On Tuesday, Steward was named Golfweek Women's Player of the Week.

Neurological Surgery opens new office in Weston
The Department of Neurological Surgery's Pediatric Division in conjunction with the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center have opened a new office located at the Dan Marino Center in Weston. The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery specializes in the treatment of infants and children with hydrocephalus, vascular disorders, head and spine injuries, tumor of the brain and spine, epilepsy, myelomeningocele, and other congenital malformations. The division has pioneered minimally invasive surgical techniques, and care is provided in a multidisciplinary setting that brings together a team of physicians, scientists, nurses, social workers, and psychologists dedicated to the study and treatment of children with neurological disorders. Free mammograms for UM employees
The University will sponsor free mammography screenings for faculty and staff on various dates and campuses in the coming weeks as part of Benefits Administration's new wellness initiative, UMatter. Download the mammogram screening schedule for a complete list of locations, dates, and times. To be eligible, interested participants must be an employee enrolled in one of the University-sponsored Humana health plans, must have a prescription from a physician, must be asymptomatic (no symptoms of breast illness or disease, no pain, discharge, etc.), must not have had a mammogram in the last 365 days, and must be at least 40 years of age. To register for an appointment, call 1-800-533-5001. Information on breast cancer and other preventive care programs will be presented by Humana Health Services Research Center representatives.

The Art of Fundraising

Britto's original painting, created especially for the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute and titled Love Life, is currently on display and for sale at Britto’s Lincoln Road Gallery in Miami Beach. The kick-off raised more than $34,000 and will support research at UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The replica silk scarf of Love Life, held by Kobetz, is available by calling 305-243-9088. All proceeds go to the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at UM/Sylvester.

Conflict resolution workshop offered at medical campus
Participate with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in a workshop designed to help attendees improve their conflict resolution and negotiation skills. The workshop, which will be held on the medical campus Tuesday, October 31 from 1 to 4 p.m. in room 155 of the Dominion Parking Garage, uses a blended training format. The first part is completed online, and the second part is an interactive face-to-face skills session. In order to register, it is necessary to complete the CBL (Computer Based Learning) portion. Through December Books of the Maya: Ancient and Modern. Treasures from the University of Miami Libraries’ remarkable assortment of Maya and Mexican research materials are on display in the lobby of the Otto G. Richter Library. The exhibit features a facsimile copy of the Codex Madrid; the original is one of four surviving pre-conquest Mayan books in existence. Works in the exhibit highlight the common cultural threads connecting the modern world and ancient civilization. Today, Thursday, October 26 Exhibit premiere: Dive into the Past: An Exhibit on the Little Salt Spring Archaeological Site. The UM Rosenstiel School library presents an exhibit featuring artifacts that are up to 12,000 years old and have been found in Little Salt Spring during research dives. Little Salt Spring is one of the most important archaeological sites in the nation for the wealth of artifacts it has yielded about the first Floridians. The exhibit will remain on display through November. Admission is free, and the exhibit premiere will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rosenstiel School library on the Rosenstiel campus.

Today, Thursday, October 26 Screening and Discussion: An Inconvenient Truth. The Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy and the Environmental Law Society present a screening of Al Gore’s documentary along with a panel discussion on climate change, science, and U.S. policy. The panel includes Harvey Ruvin, clerk of courts in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, and Amy Clement, notable climate researcher and assistant professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
