NCAA: UM student-athletes have above-average graduation rate
University of Miami student-athletes who entered college between 1998 and 2001 had an overall graduation rate of 81 percent, according to figures released by the NCAA earlier this month. That figure exceeded the 78 percent rate registered for all Division 1 schools.
"The University of Miami athletic department takes great pride in the success that our student-athletes achieve in the classroom, and I want to compliment our current and former student-athletes for their continued academic achievements," said Kirby Hocutt, director of athletics.
Four teams—men's diving, women's basketball, women's golf, and women's tennis—all recorded a 100 percent graduation rate, while 12 teams exceeded the Division 1 average for their sports. Thirteen sports achieved a score of at least 70 percent, while ten sports had at least an 88 percent graduation success rate.

The Future of Health Care
Affordable, quality health care is one of the most critical issues of the 2008 election, as both presidential candidates continue to propose solutions to help stem the crisis of 47 million Americans who are without health insurance. To that end, surrogates for Barack Obama and John McCain discussed on Tuesday the health care policies of their candidates during a forum at Storer Auditorium.
In a lively discussion that included questions from the audience, Democratic surrogate Nancy-Ann Min DeParle, former administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services who is now an adjunct professor of health care systems at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Republican surrogate U.S. Congressman Michael C. Burgess, of the 26th District of Texas, contrasted the plans of Obama and McCain and answered questions posed by members from the audience. The event was part of the Dialogue for Democracy series.
Above: Burgess, left, talks about how McCain’s health care plan would work as DeParle, right, looks on. The discussion also included UM faculty and student panelists, seen at the table, from left: Richard Boxer, professor of clinical urology at the Miller School of Medicine; Mary Coombs, professor at the School of Law; Arjun K. Parasher, a second-year medical student at the Miller School; and Steven G. Along the way, we discover Kim’s musical talent when she finds the only existing copy of her recorded music survived the storm with a relative in Memphis. Kim’s performance in that moment reveals not only her skills as a musician, but compacts her life story into explosive poetry that paints a devastating picture of poverty. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission is $8. Guests must show identification for discounted admission. The film screens on Friday at 9 p.m., Saturday at 4 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.

This beautiful technicolor print is part of the Raymond J. Regis Film Collection at the School of Communication’s Moving Image Archives and is being presented with generous support from the University of Miami Citizens Board. Admission is $6 for all UM faculty, staff, and alumni, and is free for students. General admission is $8.
