UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI MEDICAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The University of Miami offers, in conjunction with the University of Miami School of Medicine, the Medical Scholars Program (MSP). Exceptionally capable students are accepted into this program at the end of their sophomore year (all four semesters must be completed at the University of Miami). With admission into the MSP, students are assured of a place in the freshman class of the School of Medicine after successfully completing the MSP requirements which includes completion of the junior year of undergraduate studies at the University of Miami. Following the junior year, students begin their medical studies at the School of Medicine.
Invitations to apply to the MSP are extended to students who entered the University with a SAT of 1270 or higher or an ACT of at least 29, and who have completed the freshman year at the University with a GPA of at least 3.4. Applicants who have completed their MSP files and have maintained at least a 3.4 GPA are interviewed by the Medical School Admissions Committee near the end of the sophomore year and are informed of their status shortly thereafter. Admission to this program is highly competitive.
By the end of their junior year, students admitted to the MSP will have accumulated a minimum of ninety credits, including those required for the major (except the Biology major) and the minor, and those needed to fulfill all distribution requirements for graduation. Part of the 90 credit requirement may be satisfied by AP credits, but the 90 credit requirement must include the following minimum number of graded credits: Biology, 8: Chemistry, 16; English, 6; Physics, 10; electives in science or math, 8. In meeting the MSP requirements, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 and a 3.2 GPA in the science courses required to enter the School of Medicine.
All students accepted into the MSP must take the MCAT before beginning their medical studies. The results of the MCAT will be used in assessing the student's preparedness to study medicine and in making scholarship decisions. MCAT results, however, will not be used to determine whether a student is allowed to continue in the program or to enter the School of Medicine.
Upon successful completion of the first year of medical studies, students who entered through the MSP will be awarded the appropriate bachelor's degree.
Note: The Committee on Admissions for the Medical Scholars Program requires (as part of your application) either a letter from the Prehealth Advisory Committee (preferred), or three letters of recommendation from UM faculty members who can provide an evaluation of your academic performance and insight into your personal qualifications for a career in medicine. If you want a committee letter of recommendation for your Medical Scholars Application, your file must be complete by February 13, 1998. Please make an appointment with the Prehealth Advisor to discuss the process.
