ABC – Analysis of Black Cinema
Mahoney Residential College

A.B.C. explores the evolution of Black Cinema and identifies the salient images the media currently promotes.  The community primarily focuses on the works of Tyler Perry, a filmmaker with significant influence on modern African American film and comedy, and looks at themes such as race, class, socioeconomic status, and education with discussions that are intended to foster critical analysis.

Audio Abode
Eaton Residential College (2010-2013)

The Audio Abode is an active and engaging living-learning community focused on exploring the real world applications of engineering and sound related concepts.  The end results of these concepts, collectively known as music technologies, are hardware and software components that allow for the amplification, recording, and playback of audio.  Through research and discussion of music technologies, particularly those that are available for student use, the Audio Abode seeks to create a strong, close-knit community that encourages the academic achievement of its residents and a greater understanding of current technologies.

BAM – Bienvenidos a Miami
Mahoney Residential College (2010-2011)

BAM explores the cultural diversity of the Miami area by providing alternative means of social interaction for its residents.  BAM allows participants to establish a meaningful connection with the greater Miami community through programming that provides cultural and educational experiences.  Hosting local speakers, touring the city, and performing community service for those in need, are a few ways BAM encourages its residents to find a greater appreciation of the surrounding community.

Becoming a Healthier U
Mahoney Residential College (2011-2012)

Creating a healthy, balanced life is essential to achieving your best both in-and-out of the classroom.  Residents of Becoming a Healthier U are exposed to programs on healthy eating and cooking, yoga, meditative techniques, and important health related issues such as stress management and proper nutrition.  Additionally, by living together the floor hopes to encourage to and support its residents with living a lifestyle reflective of its ideals for a healthy and well balanced life.

The BURROW – Breathtakingly Unbelievably Radical Residence of Wizards

Calling all Beaters, Chasers, and Keepers! The BURROW seeks to create a positive, encouraging atmosphere where residents feel comfortable expressing themselves as well as their interest in the Harry Potter series.  Students who share a mutual love of Harry Potter and Muggle Quidditch have the opportunity to live together in a community that encourages each resident to embrace their unique individuality.  The BURROW’s Muggle Quidditich teams provide an alternative method of physical activity for residents uninterested or unable to participate in traditional club and intramural sports. Additionally, The BURROW hosts academic and social programs for its residents aimed at promoting achievement and building community.

CASTLE – Canes Advocating a Substance Temperate Living Environment
Pearson Residential College (2010-2013)

CASTLE provides upperclassmen with a welcoming community that promotes a substance temperate lifestyle.  The community focuses on providing a diverse range of activities for its residents that are absent from the pressure to use drugs or alcohol.  CASTLE residents spend their free time forming tight knit friendships through simple on floor activities such as watching movies and by participating in educational and cultural activities in the Miami community.

Cultural U
Pearson Residential College (2011-2012)

Cultural U explores academic, career, and cultural programming aimed at exposing its residents to new and diverse educational experiences.  The community’s residents gained insight into how to confidently conduct themselves in a wide array of social, professional, and academic settings.  By exploring eye-opening and educational experiences together, Cultural U hopes to create a tightknit community for its residents.  Floor programming is diverse, like its residents’ interests, with programs including:  proper business etiquette on a golf course, understanding different religious traditions by visiting places of worship, and the development of greater environmental awareness with exploration of the Everglades.

The Environment & U
Mahoney Residential College (2012-2013)

The Environment & U is a living-learning community dedicated to promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of nature while encouraging environmentally friendly living.  The community experiences the unique outdoor environments South Florida offers by touring local state parks and enjoying a range of outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and snorkeling.  The community also participates in local cleanup efforts and is devoted to recycling on the floor.

Foundations is a living-learning community focused on the in depth exploration of diversity.  Through this exploration the community aims to improve communication and foster relationships among the University's diverse student body.  The Foundations community is an open, engaging, and motivational living environment that encourages its residents’ academic success, community involvement, and career goals.  Residents benefit from informal study groups, lectures on academic and cultural topics, and career shadowing opportunities.  Additionally, Foundations hopes to expand its influence beyond the campus through its partnerships with local youth mentoring programs and the promotion of community service activities.

HARMONY – Healthy Habits, Arts, Respect for Self, Others, & Environment, Meditation, Outdoor Activities, Natural Living, Yoga)

HARMONY seeks to create a positive, peaceful living environment conducive to personal and academic growth.  Residents care for and support each other’s well-being and inspire each other to live happy, healthy, and balanced lives.  Programs include private yoga, cooking, and meditation classes; as well as off-campus activities that explore the natural environment and the arts.

Pearson Residential College (2010-2012)

Hashi encourages the exploration of world cultures by providing an open and accepting environment that facilitates the positive dissemination of diverse cultural viewpoints, values, and issues.  Programming includes panel discussions on cultural issues, foreign film nights, ethnic dinners and instructional cooking demonstrations; as well as the exploration of cultural sites throughout Miami.  Residents will also be exposed to the richness of the numerous foreign languages spoken fluently amongst its residents, including Spanish, French, Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Pre-Health Science Community
Mahoney Residential College (2012-2013)

This community for pre-health science students interested in the fields of:  Allopathic (M.D.) or Osteopathic Medicine (O.D.), Dentistry, Podiatry, Veterinary Medicine, Chiropractic, and Optometry.  The Faculty Advisor provides guidance to residents on their academic curriculum to ensure they meet all necessary course requirements and create the most competitive application file possible during their time at UM.  By living together, these pre-health students provide a supportive bond for one another as they face the academic and extracurricular challenges of their intended fields.

STRIVE – Serving Together Reaching Integrity, Values, & Engagement

STRIVE is a living-learning community where participants commit to living a lifestyle focused on community service and leadership development.  Each student agrees to complete 8 hours of service, civic engagement, and leadership activities every two weeks.  Additionally, students participate in a monthly group service project, as well as weekly house meetings, which are focused on developing student leadership skills and raising awareness about various social issues impacting society today.  Ultimately STRIVE seeks to provide its residents with the necessary skills and tools to become catalysts for social change.

U Live U Learn
Eaton Residential College (2010-2013)

U Live U Learn is a living-learning community of the University’s distinguished scholarship and Honors Program students.  The community focuses on giving academically talented students an environment in which to openly share their interests, embrace new ideas, and productively study while relaxing and enjoying a full undergraduate experience. U Live U Learn provides residents with a supportive atmosphere of study.  By facilitating a balance of varied, intellectually stimulating and study break leisure activities, U Live U Learn creates a dynamic social and academic atmosphere for its residents.  Community members have an assortment of majors and interests but are brought together by a common love of learning.  U Live U Learn invites Singer, Hammond, Jenkins, and Gate Millennium Scholars along with Foote Fellows and Honors Program students to join this educational and engaging community.  If you are interested in living in a community as equally focused on excelling academically as it is on having an engaging out of classroom experience then this floor is for you!

U Read
Pearson Residential College (2011-2012)

URead seeks to create an atmosphere in which students diversify their literary interests and gain perspective on modern issues through contemporary literary works.  Residents of URead explore different genres of modern literature each month through literary work collectively selected by the community.  At the end of each month, residents come together for an in depth discussion of the work and learn from other members’ unique perspective and experience with the book.  Additonally, URead hosts author lectures, attends local book signings, and gives back to the community through book drives and other service events.
