The School of Nursing and Health Studies has set the standard for quality nursing and health studies in South Florida for more than 50 years. Established in 1948 as the region’s first baccalaureate nursing program, the school has educated nurses at the master’s level since 1976 and the doctoral level since 1985. Unique in Florida, UM has the only nursing program statewide affiliated with a major academic medical center, a private, acute care hospital, and a public teaching hospital system. The school partners regularly with the UM Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers, the University of Miami Hospital, a private, 560-bed acute care hospital, and the UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital, a 1,567 bed, public teaching hospital in inner-city Miami that serves the largest proportion of Medicaid and indigent clients in Florida. UM offers the only graduate nursing programs in South Florida ranked among the top 100 by U.S. News and World Report (2008). Over half of the school’s faculty are engaged in collaborative projects in areas ranging from health disparities and minority health, HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases, and substance abuse and intimate partner violence, to family and maternal-child health, and patient safety.
