School of Nursing and Health Studies Dean To Be Honored by Broward Hispanic Group
Coral Gables, FL.- Nilda P. Peragallo, DrPH,RN, FAAN, dean of the University of Miami’s School of Nursing and Health Studies, has been awarded the 2006 Amigos Award by Hispanic Unity of Florida, a Broward-based community group.
Recognized internationally for her research on HIV and AIDS among Hispanic populations, Dean Peragallo is receiving the award for her tireless work on behalf of Hispanic women across the United States.
“Nilda is positively influencing the lives of Latino women through her research, particularly on HIV, her advocacy especially at the national level , and her leadership as Dean of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami,” said Josie Bacallao, president and CEO of Hispanic Unity.
Dr. Peragallo, a native of Chile, will receive the award at the group’s fundraising gala, Con Sabor a Mexico, to be held on September 16, at the Westin Diplomat Resort, 3555 South Ocean Drive at 7 p.m.
Dr. Peragallo is immediate past president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses and co-editor of Hispanic Healthcare International. She was recently appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the National Advisory Council to the NIH/National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
Hispanic Unity’s mission is to provide Hispanics and other members of South Florida community with the services, resources and contacts needed to lead productive lives. During the gala City Furniture will also be honored with the Amigos Corporate Award.

Established in 1948 as South Florida’s first collegiate nursing program, the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami has a distinguished tradition of preparing nurses to provide compassionate, quality care to local, national and international communities. Nursing students at the undergraduate and graduate levels are educated by renowned scholars and exposed to a broad range of clinical experiences and cutting-edge research. In February 2005, the School expanded its program offerings to include the University of Miami’s Health Science program and changed its name to the School of Nursing and Health Studies. The expanded curriculum includes programs leading toward the BSN, MSN, and PhD degrees as well as the BS in Health Science degree.
