UM School of Nursing Receives Special Recognition on its 60th Anniversary
Miami-Dade County honors UM School of Nursing and Health Studies on its Diamond Anniversary for academic excellence and service to society

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – On its Diamond Anniversary, the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies was honored by Miami-Dade County for its commitment to academic excellence and service to our society. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and the Board of County Commissioners declared Tuesday, October 7, 2008, as University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies 60th Anniversary Day. The presentation was made by County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez.

“I would like to congratulate the University Miami’s School of Nursing and Health Studies on their 60th Anniversary of educating and excellence,” said Gimenez. “It is my honor to present Dean Nilda P. Peragallo with a proclamation from Miami-Dade County for achieving this special milestone.”

Established in 1948, the school was the first in the region to offer a baccalaureate degree in Nursing. Throughout the years, it has continued to set the standard for quality nursing and health studies in South Florida, by also offering master’s and doctoral degrees. In 2007, the school received a $7 million, five year grant from the National Institutes of Health National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The funds support the University of Miami Center of Excellence for Hispanic Health Disparities Research, El Centro.

As stated in the proclamation, the school strives for academic distinction and service to society “Throughout coursework and outreach programs, the clinical faculty at the University of Miami: School of Nursing and Health Studies prepares students to address the health needs of our increasingly diverse and rapidly changing society, all with the mission of creating cultural competent leaders, who will render exceptional service to people not only in our County, but throughout the Nation and world,”
