• UM hires AND PAYS UNICCO. • UNICCO has said multiple times all UM would have to do is fund a living wage and UNICCO would institute a higher wage. • In 2001, UM was cited as the 2nd to worst pay in the nation out of 195 colleges. • UM’s VP for Business & Finance said, “We allow them to pay whatever they want to pay as long as they can recruit and retain workers, and still make a buck at the end of the day." • BOTH the Faculty Senate & Student Government voted for a living wage in 2001. • Ask us what came of it. • Total Net Assets for UM in 2004 was $1,287,047,132. A raise AND healthcare for UNICCO workers at UM would total 0.7% of TNA in 2004. • In a recent meeting, Pat Whitely said, “There is no way we will provide job security”. • The UM adminisration claims neutrality, while they allow UNICCO to hold mandatory anti-union meetings on the UM campus where workers are threatened with their jobs if they support a union; some workers were already suspended, Zoila Mursoli was fired. • Yelba Diaz suffered a heart attack after one such mandatory anti-union meeting; her $13,000 salary won't cover her $40,000 medical bill. • Meanwhile back at the ranch, UM just raised over $ONE BILLION for its Momentum Campaign • WE have a campaign too! • Workers aren't trained on how to properly protect themselves from the chemicals they use daily • "The issue is simple. You don't hire a company that doesn't pay a living wage!" - Dr. Spivey. • President Shalala is the former Secretary of Health & Human Services under President Bill Clinton; during her exit interview she said her greatest regret was "not making sure that every American that gets up and goes to work in the morning has good health insurance for themselves and for their families. It's still a big gap. There's still 40 million Americans who don't have health insurance, and we need to do something about that." • Start on your own campus Shalala! • P.S. the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recently indicted UNICCO for over 160 violations across the US; 13 of which happened here on our UM Campus. • What kind of people are running this school? • WHY IS THIS STILL AN ISSUE?!
