TRI WORKSHOPS

The Touch Research Institute Workshop is a 2-day intensive training course on conducting touch therapy research. There are no professional requirements for attending this workshop; we encourage anyone interested in the massage studies to attend the workshop.

PROGRAM DESIGN
The workshop is very much like an apprenticeship with hands-on experience both conducting touch therapies and learning various aspects of research including different forms of data collection, such as interviews, questionnaires and behavioral observations monitoring physiological measures; and collecting biochemical samples, including saliva and urine. Basically, the program involves modeling and demonstrations of these various procedures by researchers at the TRI and first hand involvement in the research and therapy activities. Upon completion of the workshop course, the participants will be given a cetificate for Florida and National Continuing Education Units (CEUs) (12 units each).

RESEARCH METHODS TRAINING
In addition to the hands-on experience, during the workshop, participants will attend a variety of interactive sessions in which they will learn the basic principles of conducting research. Participants will learn about the process of evaluating and designing touch therapy research. They will learn about the different kinds of measures that assess the effects of massage, the essential components of a good research study and how to get one started. The workshop is a great tool for those interested in advancing the field of massage therapy by conducting research in their own community.

CURRENT ONGOING RESEARCH STUDIES:
· a pregnancy study that examines the effects of massage therapy on depression during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and newborn outcome

· a premature infant study that seeks to determine the effects of massage therapy on weight gain
