Degree Programs
The Department of Sociology at the University of Miami offers
two graduate degrees, the Master of Arts (M.A.) and the Doctor
of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Graduate study in the Department of
Sociology equips students with the theoretical, methodological,
and analytical tools required for teaching, research, and
scholarship in academic and non-academic settings.
I. The Ph.D. program in Sociology
Graduate students in the Ph.D. program are encouraged to choose
concentrations from three substantive program areas: (1) Criminology;
(2) Race & Ethnic Relations; and (3) Medical Sociology.
Although the strengths of the department lie within these
major programmatic fields, students may also plan one course
of study that meets their own research interests and career
objectives. Our current faculty and graduate students study
a wide range of exciting topics, including Aging/Life Course,
Crime/Delinquency, Economics of Crime, Health Economics, Mental
Illness, Morbidity/Mortality, Neighborhood Context, Race/Ethnicity,
Racism/Discrimination, Sex/Gender, Social Psychology, Socioeconomic
Status, and Substance Abuse.
II. Requirements for the Master of Arts degree with
a major in Sociology are:
A. Candidates must complete at least 31 hours of graduate
credit at the 500 level or above.
B. Candidates must submit and successfully defend a thesis
in accordance with current Graduate School policy.
C. Course work must include Sociology 601, 602, 604, 610
or 613, 611, and 615 or 616.
D. Six credit hours must be counted toward thesis work.
E. No more than 6 hours of “independent study”
can be applied toward the M.A. degree.
F. With prior departmental approval, 3 hours of course work
in a related discipline may be counted toward the M.A. degree.
G. A maximum of 6 hours can be transferred from acceptable
graduate institutions.
III. Requirements for the Ph.D. degree with a major
in Sociology are:
A. Candidates must hold an M.A. degree.
B. Candidates must complete at least 42 hours of graduate
credit beyond the M.A. degree.
C. Course work must include Sociology 612, one of 613 or
610, 622, 615 or 616, and 18 hours split evenly between
two of our three areas of concentration.
D. Some candidates may be required to complete courses in
areas where they have incomplete backgrounds (e.g., statistics,
research methods, or theory).
E. Candidates must pass four comprehensive examinations.
F. Candidates must submit and successfully defend a dissertation
in accordance with current Graduate School policy.
