CLASS NOTES

1960s

Julian Haber, M.D. ’61, published his third novel, Blood Avenger. His first two books were lauded by the Literary Digest, The Miami Herald, and The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, among other publications.

George W. Shorago, M.D. ’64, was promoted to adjunct clinical associate professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Fred P. Swing, M.D. ’65, served for 31 years as director of anesthesia at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte, Florida. Swing started a second career teaching and practicing acupuncture. He became board certified in 2003.

Peter P. Julien, M.D. ’69, was honored by the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Alumni Association as its 2004 Alumnus of the Year. Julien is director of thoracic imaging in the Department of Imaging at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

1970s

Henry M. Haire, M.D. ’71, is associate professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in the family medicine department, where he assists with the curriculum for residents in developmental medicine.

A. Jack Grossman, M.D. ’73, has retired. Jeffrey Gibson, M.D. ’93, has assumed Grossman’s practice in plastic, reconstructive, cosmetic, and hand surgery at Mercy Hospital in Miami.

Anthony A. Mancuso, M.D. ’74, has been professor of radiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine since 1986. In 2001 he assumed the position of chair of the radiology department at the university.

Joseph Z. Forstot, M.D. ’75, F.A.C.P., F.A.C.R., has practiced rheumatology in Boca Raton, Florida, for the past 25 years. He is associate clinical professor at UM and serves in the biomedical sciences department at Florida Atlantic University. Forstot is co-founder and director of Boca Hoops, a youth basketball program in Boca Raton, as well as High-5 Basketball, a program for children with disabilities.

Ronald Edward Leach, M.D. ’75, recently completed his second term as chief of staff and serves as medical director for Union Hospital in Indiana.

Kai Fu Chow, M.D. ’78, has been nominated as the LaBelle, Florida, Chamber of Commerce 2005 Citizen of the Year. He has been in private practice in LaBelle since 1983 and serves as the medical director of the Oakbrook Nursing Home in LaBelle.

1980s

John H. Post III, M.D. ’80, is chief of orthopaedics at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a specialty practice based in arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder. He completed his fifth Ironman Triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

David Perlmutter, M.D. ’81, recently authored The Better Brain Book, which cites clinical studies demonstrating that the right food, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and a supportive life will prevent most brain degeneration.

Joseph E. Bonelli, Ph.D., M.D. ’84, after 15 years in private practice, is entering academic medicine as professor of pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

David Lee Gordon, M.D. ’85, professor of neurology and medicine, director of neurology training programs, and assistant director of the Center for Research in Medical Education at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, presented “Update in Stroke” at the American Academy of Neurology.

Susan Drukman, M.D. ’86, is in private practice in obstetrics and gynecology. She also is medical director for Planned Parenthood in Orlando.

Linda K. James, M.D. ’87, was elected chief of staff at Mendocino Coast District Hospital in Fort Bragg, California.

1990s

Cristina (Rodriguez) Montiel, M.D. ’91, is in practice at Westchester Pediatric Associates in Miami.

Ana Ceide Hodges, M.D. ’92, a private practice pediatrician, and husband Michael C. Hodges, M.D. ’93, an associate with Cape Fear Cardiology Associates, have been living in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for the past five years. Ana teaches family medicine residents who rotate through her practice. Michael, who served in the U.S. Army, is writing a book chronicling his year in Iraq serving in a combat support hospital.

Robert Puto, M.D. ’93, is chief of the urology division at Baptist Hospital in Miami.

Mukaram A. Gazi, M.D. ’95, F.A.C.S., F.I.C.S., was named director of urological oncology at Saint Barnabas Health Care System, Kimball Medical Center, in Lakewood, New Jersey. Gazi is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology.

Colleen Fitzpatrick, M.D., Jeff Halter, M.D., and David Lasko, M.D., graduates of the Class of 1999, matched into three of the 28 available spots in the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Match held in May. Fitzpatrick is finishing her residency on active duty with the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio and will attend the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. Halter, currently finishing his general surgery training at Syracuse University, matched into Children’s Hospital of Ohio in Columbus. Lasko is finishing his training at the University of Miami and will attend the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. All three graduates performed two additional years of basic science research during their general surgery residencies and will graduate in June of 2006. They will begin their two-year fellowships in July 2006.

Susanne M. Hewitt, M.D. ’99, completed a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Emory University in Atlanta in 2004, where she finished her residency in ophthalmology in 2003. Hewitt is now in private practice in Roswell, Georgia.

Jorge Luis Sotelo, M.D. ’99, will become psychiatrist in charge of the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder program at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, upon graduating from a fellowship at Dartmouth College.

2000s

Michael L. Grainger, M.D. ’00, is a radiology resident at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville. He was a recipient of the 2003 Radiological Society of North America Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award and will begin a fellowship in abdominal imaging at Duke University Medical Center in July.

Thomas Price, M.D. ’00, is an instructor in the geriatric medicine and gerontology division at Emory University School of Medicine. He also is coordinator of the residency program in geriatric medicine and was appointed to the faculty clinical track at the school. He was recently a recipient of a career development grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation, which supports initiatives in geriatrics.

Claire (Urbina) Plautz, M.D. ’01, is a faculty physician in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Her husband, Michael Plautz, M.D. ’00, is a chief resident in otolaryngology, also at the University of Virginia.

Louise Santos, M.D. ’01, completed her family practice residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center St. Margaret. She is in private practice in Palm Harbor, Florida, with Morton Plant Mease Primary Care.
