Julio C. Barredo, M.D., has been named director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Miller School. He is the Toppel Family Professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology as well as associate chair for basic research at Holtz Children’s Hospital and director of Children’s Cancer Programs at University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Barredo was recruited from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he has worked for most of his career. He leads an active laboratory program that focuses on improving treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and he is a leader of clinical trials of resistant ALL for the Children’s Oncology Group, the national clinical trials consortium that involves more than 250 children’s oncology programs. He also has been an active participant in clinical intervention studies with children with sickle cell disease. Honors he has received include the MUSC Mitchell I. Rubin Research Award, Jolley Foundation Award, and McCallister Research Fellowship.

Barredo will lead the growth of the Miller School’s Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology as well as the experimental therapeutics core of UM/Sylvester.
