CLASS NOTES

1960s

Sanford L. Yankow, M.D. ’69, who opened the only free medical clinic in Monroe County, was named the Provider of the Year by the Miami-Dade County Department of Health. He has spearheaded efforts to provide free care to people whose incomes fall within 200 percent of the national poverty level. He also received the Volunteer Physician of the Year award from the Miami-Dade Department of Health.

1970s

Margaret Ravits, M.D. ’75, is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Dermatology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, the teaching hospital of Columbia University. She was named Teacher of the Year in 2005 in addition to previous awards in 1994 and 2001.

Alan Matarasso, M.D. ’79, was recently promoted to clinical professor of plastic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was also elected president-elect of the New York Regional Society and was voted membership in the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons.

1980s

Andrew Glantz, M.D. ’83, joined the faculty at Boston University School of Medicine as clinical associate professor of surgery and is on staff at Boston Medical Center in the Divisions of General Surgery, Trauma Surgery, and Critical Care.

Lou Romig, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.E.P. ’84, is entering her 17th year as a pediatric emergency physician at Miami Children’s Hospital. In addition to working at the hospital, she is active in disaster medicine and EMS for children’s programs. She developed the JumpSTART Pediatric Multicasualty Field Triage Tool, the gold standard for use by EMS agencies around the world.

Carlos Rodriguez-Fierro, M.D. ’86, is president and chief of staff at West Jefferson Medical Center in Louisiana and chief of the division of cardiology at the institution. He also is the president-elect of the Jefferson Parish Medical Society and serves as a nuclear, interventional cardiologist and clinical assistant professor at Tulane University.

Todd Antin, M.D. ’89, was named the top adult psychiatrist in metropolitan Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine in its July 2005 issue. He was named a Distinguished Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association in May 2004. He directs a mental health practice he founded in Atlanta.

1990s

Victor Hugo Gonzalez-Quintero, M.D. ’92, was promoted to associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at the Miller School of Medicine and was recently named interim director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Angela Burrafato, M.D. ’93, is medical director of Miami Hope Center. The clinic is located in the homeless assistance center in downtown Miami. UM medical students, visiting fourth-year students, and nurse practitioner students rotate through the clinic for training.

Deborah Lemke, M.D. ’95, is currently sailing on the Diamond Princess to Alaska and the Far East as the ship’s doctor.

Cynthia Gyamfi, M.D. ’98, has joined the faculty at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in the Department of Obestrics/Gynecology, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine as assistant clinical professor.

Colleen Fitzpatrick, M.D. ’99, is completing her residency on active duty with the Air Force in San Antonio, Texas, and will be an attending at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.

2000s

Stewart B. Davis, M.D. ’03, is currently working as the medical director of a Miami-based biomedical device firm. He recently published a book, Supercharged Tips to Boost Your New SAT Score.
