Part
of the Coral Gables development plan included
a university.
|
The idea for a university
began in 1916 when William Jennings Bryan suggested
a “Pan-American University” in Miami,
but it wasn’t until 1925 that the University
of Miami took its first steps at becoming a reality.
At the time, George Merrick was in the middle of
creating a city with a Mediterranean architectural
style, Coral
Gables. After donating $5 million and 160 acres
of land, the University of Miami was granted its
charter, and Coral Gables was chosen as the site
for the University.
