LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Alumni,

Welcome to the first edition of the Med ’Cane Alumni Newsletter, produced by the University of Miami Miller School Medical Alumni Association. This biannual publication is designed to provide the latest information on alumni events, a way to connect with classmates, giving opportunities, and a spotlight on the exceptional achievements of our Miller School alumni.

I am not only your Medical Alumni Association President and a Miller School alumna, but also the parent of a fourth-year Miller School medical student, a radiology resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a fourth-year UM undergraduate student.

We know all alumni are doing amazing things as Miller School graduates, and representing our alma mater with pride and distinction. That is why we ask that you keep in touch with us – we love to hear how and what you are doing. This newsletter is designed to be your one-stop alumni resource, so we need your input.

You can contact us via the Medical Alumni website or e-mail us at alumni@med.miami.edu.

I encourage you to enjoy our Med ’Cane newsletter, visit your campus, nominate exceptional alumni for the alumni awards, attend our Medical Alumni Weekend, and above all, be proud to be an alumni of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine!

Maria Victoria Egusquiza, M.D. '87

UM NEWS
University of Miami President Julio Frenk Launches Listening Exercise for First 100 Days in Office
The start of the new academic year brought exciting change at the helm of the University of Miami. On August 16, Julio Frenk, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., began his reign as the University’s sixth president, succeeding former president Donna E. Shalala.

Frenk held a Town Hall meeting on September 10 to hear from members of the University community and to outline the Listening Exercise initiative he has launched for his first 100 days in office. He described it as an intensive, immersive, and iterative listening project—one that invites students, faculty, and staff to share with him their aspirations and hopes for the University.

An Inauguration ceremony for President Frenk will be held January 29, 2016 at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables. A website for his Listening Exercise initiative -- miami.edu/listen -- has been launched where people can weigh in with recommendations. | Read more

Stethoscopes for Students Welcomed by Class of 2019
Only a short time into his first year at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Jeremy Freedman, M.D. candidate, Class of 2019, considers himself lucky to have already earned one of the most recognized symbols of the medical profession.

The 31-year-old from Miami was recently given his very first stethoscope, courtesy of a new initiative created by the School’s Medical Alumni Association called “Stethoscopes for Students.”

The program is designed to provide incoming medical students with their first stethoscope, as a way of welcoming them to the Miller School. | Read more
