Distinguished recognition of excellence

Eduardo de Marchena, M.D., professor of medicine and surgery, received the American Heart Association’s Cor Vitae award at the organization’s annual Miami-Dade Heart Ball in May. The award recognizes an outstanding physician in the county whose focus is in cardiovascular medicine or stroke.

Barth Green, M.D., professor and chair of neurological surgery, received the AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award during the 12th Annual Health Care Heroes Awards presented by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. Green was honored for his work in spinal cord injury, as well as for providing health care in the impoverished central plateau of Haiti.

Judy Schaechter, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and associate chair of pediatrics for community outreach, received the Health Care Professionals Award at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce ceremony. She was recognized for her work in injury- and violence-prevention programs aimed at children.

Robert J. Myerburg, M.D., professor of medicine and physiology, received a Doctor of Medicine honorary degree from the faculty of medicine at the commencement of the University of Oulu in Oulu, Finland.

Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics and psychology and director of the Mailman Center for Child Development, received the 2009 American Cancer Society Lane W. Adams Quality of Life Award.

Bart Chernow, M.D., professor of medicine and vice provost for technology advancement, won a Technology Leader of the Year Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce in the Best Use of Technology category.

Karl Magleby, Ph.D., professor and chair of physiology and biophysics, received the Kenneth S. Cole Award from the Biophysical Society’s Membrane Biophysics Subgroup. The award is given to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to membrane biophysics.
