Bringing Medical Advances to the Market

UM Innovation, the University initiative dedicated to introducing new treatments and technologies to the marketplace, held its first UM Innovation Showcase over two days in December at the Four Seasons Miami.

John Reed, M.D., Ph.D., a national biotechnology leader, was a featured speaker at the showcase.

While the second day, December 3, was devoted to highlighting medical breakthroughs and therapies in development stages, the previous day saw the launch of UM Innovation’s Corporate Advisory Council at a meeting chaired by Bart Chernow, M.D., vice president for special programs and resource strategy at UHealth and the Miller School and director of UM Innovation.

University President Donna E. Shalala, Miller School Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., and Chernow welcomed the council members, an impressive group of executives from medicine and industry, intellectual property law, and other areas, as well as members of the UM faculty.

“UM Innovation is an opportunity to move medicine into the 21st century,” Goldschmidt told the group.

Dozens of people from the scientific, investment, and related industries visited the showcase to observe posters and formal oral presentations that highlighted some of the medical school’s most brilliant physicians and scientists and their research. John Reed, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Burnham Institute for Medical Research, was the day’s luncheon speaker.
